Where there’s construction or repair, there’s Pinoy business

This is really Pinoy ingenuity at work! My family and I were on our way to Davao City when we had to stop at Mangima Road, Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon. As it turned out, there was an ongoing road repair (I learned that from this huge tarp along the side of the road which prominently featured the face of President Gloria Arroyo instead of the facts and data about the infrastructure project…but ah, that’s for another post) and only one lane was open for passage.

As we waited for our turn to pass through, I noticed a lot of makeshift shanties. And then I spotted these:

Mangima scene Mangima scene 2 Mangima scene 3

Children and their parents offering just about anything to people waiting in their vehicles. From peanuts to steamed corn to “ice tubig,” (ice water) children as young as 5 years old would hawk their products, hoping that the waiting passengers would bother to open their windows and probably buy something.

So, yes, while this does show how ingenious Filipinos can be, it also mirrors a sad fact in our society. That not all children are in school and that even children are forced to do labor. Probably not because they were told by their parents but because they themselves know that every centavo counts and every little thing they can do can go a long way for their respective families.

So now I can’t help but wonder where these children will be once the road repair’s finished. Will they go back to school? Will their parents find jobs? Are those makeshift shanties their real homes or do they have a “real home” to go back to? Or will their families seek for another construction or repair site where they can sell products and just accept the harsh realities of life?

Rep. Klarex Uy invitational airsoft tourney in CDO to welcome VisMin airsoft aficionados

Airsoft aficionados from both Visayas and Mindanao are very welcome to join the Congressman Klarex Uy Invitational Airsoft Tournament - “Tactical Breach: Mission Compromised” event slated this March 7-8, 2009 at the Pueblo de Oro grounds, Cagayan de Oro City, Mindanao. Breaking news: Basilan mayor slain in ambush

Karam Jakilan, mayor of Albarkah, Basilan, along with three others, was slain in an ambush just this afternoon. They were attacked in Tipo-Tipo, according to police reports.

Basilan is located just off the southern coast of Zamboanga Peninsula, Mindanao, Philippines. Basilan, which is within the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), is the biggest and northernmost among the major islands of the Sulu Archipelago.

Basilan Police Superintendent Salik Macapantar reportedly said that the mayor, his driver and two unnamed persons - a man and a woman - were killed at around 4 pm today. Meanwhile, three people included in the convoy were hurt.

Police believe that the motive of the killing was “rido,” which pertains to blood feuds that often go unresolved over several generations.

Our deep condolences to the bereaved families.

So I received a cool package recently…

Sen. Chiz Escudero shirtsCheck out the contents of a package sent to me via courier recently. (Apologies for the poor quality of the photos as I only took them via my ever trusty Motorola Krzr phone.) Now…is this a sign of things to come? Is this something die hard supporters should be elated about? Or is this just a way for HIM to thank his friends, fans, foes (?) and supporters?

You know…the year 2010 is a presidential election year and this early, we have heard of the many personalities who have made it clear that they have intentions of gunning for the top executive position in Philippine government. From Senator Manny Villar to Senator Mar Roxas to Senator Loren Legarda.

Do you think HE will run?

Do you think he will face Legarda in the quest to get the NPC Party’s nod?

And do you think he has good chances of winning?

Share your thoughts!

Avail of the 50 percent discount on a DTI permit, Mindanaoan!

Got laid off? Have you been toying with the idea of launching a business? Want to concentrate on being self-employed this time around? Well, now’s a great time to do it and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is doing its share of making that plan of yours easier on the pocket. According to a press release sent to me (Mindanaoan) by the Department of Trade and Industry, the DTI has reportedly slashed its business name registration and renewal fees to half. Yes, you read that right. A fifty percent discount on that much-needed DTI business permit. This, in accordance to a department order issued by DTI Secretary Peter Favila.

Instead of the standard P300.00 fee for business name registration, DTI will now only collect P150.00 per business name registration and renewal transaction. This temporary reduction of business name registration fees is ongoing and will be good until July 15, 2009.

You can avail of this discount at any DTI office nationwide. Just call your local DTI office for more details.

Meanwhile, you can also apply for business name approval online via DTI’s BNRS website. I suggest that you do a mock search of your proposed business name just so you can check if it hasn’t been adopted by another company or entrepreneur yet.

Please let me know if you found this entry helpful by leaving a quick comment on this post (let me know if you did avail of the discount or if you really want to be an entrepreneur this year!) or better yet, please SUBSCRIBE to Mindanaoan so you can be regularly updated. Bukidnon’s Kaamulan Festival 2009 to start by February 18, 2009

The much-awaited Kaamulan Festival 2009 in Bukidnon, Mindanao, Philippines is set to begin on February 18 and I myself cannot wait to join in the festivities! The Kaamulan Festival is the largest festival in Bukidnon and is largely renowned as the only remaining authentic ethnic festival in the Philipines. Kaamulan is an indigenous Bukidnon term for “gathering” for any purpose. It can also mean a datuship ritual, a wedding ceremony, a thanksgiving festival during harvest time, a peace pact, or all of these together.

I was furnished a tentative schedule of activities for this year’s Kaamulan Festival celebration in the Province of Bukidnon by the Bukidnon Tourism Office and although I can say that there aren’t that many changes from previous celebrations, there are still a lot of things to look forward to.

This year’s celebration will kickoff by February 18 and will end by March 10, the very day when Bukidnon is set to celebrate its 92nd Foundation Day.

The Kaamulan Festival, which began in the year 1977, is an ethnic festivall featuring the province of Bukidnon’s seven (7) hill tribes namely Tala-andig, Higaonon, Umayamnon, Manobo, Tigwahanon, Matigsalug and Bukidnon.

Activities during the Kaamulan Festival usually include a bazaar, garden show, food fest, agri-fair, rodeo, motorcross, concerts, pamuhat (traditional exercise), ethnic songwriting workshop, ethnic dance clinic, piniliyapan (Bukidnon Dances), a much-awaited ethnic street dancing competition (Sayaw Sayaw Ta Dalan), barn dance and various other rituals which showcase the rich culture and beliefs of tribal Bukidnons. There will also be a battle of the bands this year, a concert to be produced by a large telecoms company, another concert to be sponsored by the Provincial Government of Bukidnon and Bukidnon’s very own Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri, an airsoft tournament, a mountain bike tournament and a basketball tournament.

Rest assured that Mindanaoan will publish the official schedule of activities for this year’s Kaamulan Festival! Stay tuned ;) Better yet, SUBSCRIBE to Mindanaoan so that you can easily be updated via email! Just key in your email address in the box below this post.

Now, if you’re interested to travel to Bukidnon and witness the Kaamulan Festival, check out this page for details on how to get to the Province of Bukidnon.

Meanwhile, for those who miss singing the Bukidnon Hymn, here are the lyrics of this beautiful song:

BUKIDNON MY HOME

Wherever I may roam
the distant land to see

I long to go back soon
to sweet Bukidnon home.

Her lovely mountains high
her forest old and grand
bring memories to me
the home I long to see.

There my heart, yearns to be
in far away, Bukidnon land
under its blue starry skies
where love and joy never die

Are you willing to pay P6,000 to the Philippine government just so you can blog?

Because this seems to be the case if ever a proposal dubbed “Guidelines on the Provision of Contents, Information, Applications and Electronic Games” lodged before the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) pushes through. Now, how does this affect Mindanaoan bloggers or content providers here in the Philippines, you ask? This controversial proposal, when loosely translated, would mean that the Philippine government wants to require people to hold licenses in order to create or post content online. And, of course, there will be corresponding fees and charges. Under the proposal, a filing fee of P300.00 shall be imposed and an annual registration fee of P6,000.00. There will also reportedly be surcharges for late filings.

While the proposal probably has commendable objectives and while the proposal probably mainly targets corporations or business entities that provide content online, I still see a problem especially in the definition of terms. Under the said proposal, “Contents Providers” are supposedly persons or entities offering and providing contents to the public for compensation through the networks, systems and/or facilities of authorized networks, systems and/or facilities providers while “Contents Developers” are persons or entities creating contents.

Aren’t bloggers content providers?

Does this mean that once this proposal gets ratified, bloggers are required to not only apply for that license but to shoulder that P6,000.00 as well?

As of this writing, the available draft of this proposal is dated December 2, 2008. There was supposed to be a public hearing last January 22, 2009 but that got canceled. I wonder why. Also, I wonder if this proposal got raised because of the recent blogger/blogging incidents? (i.e. Bambee dela Paz’s blog entry about the alleged mauling incident between her brother and father and the Pangandamans and the student bloggers of the Quezon City Science High School who got suspended because of their allegations against their principal)

What do you think…is this something we Filipino bloggers (especially Mindanao bloggers) should be worried about?

Off to Cebu City! Visayas here I come!

January 21, 2009 by Taga Mindanao
Filed under Mindanaoan Update, Personal, Tourism, Travel, Visayas

Mindanaoan is off to Cebu City tomorrow and will be back by Tuesday. However, I just got word that the hotel in Cebu where I’ll stay in has WiFi access (hopefully it’s free! *fingers crossed*) so I think I’ll be able to post and entry or two while I’m in the Queen City of the South. My trip will be a combination of business and pleasure so I really hope to make the most of my time in Cebu City.

While it’s not my first time to travel to Cebu City, Visayas, it’ll be my first time to take “better photos” (hopefully!) of the city’s sights. It’ll be my first time to take photos using my ever trusty Nokia DSLR, my first time since I got more engrossed with digital photography and my first time since the photography workshops, trainings and one-on-one tutorials. Pretty excited - yes I am!

I’m also looking forward to trying the much-talked about Edge Coaster and Skywalk over at the Crown Regency Hotel and Towers in downtown Cebu. Hopefully I’ll be able to muster enough guts to try those two. Has anybody tried the Edge Coaster yet? Was it scary?

I also hope to visit the Sto. Nino Church, Taoist Temple and a beach resort in Mactan, Cebu. I’m not sure which resort to go to yet, though - any suggestions? I’ve already been to Tambuli and Portofino.
