I got word that Philippine Airlines (PAL) has donated a thermal scanner that can detect if a person has flu or fever. This thermal scanner is set to be installed at the Lumbia Airport in Cagayan de Oro City, Northern Mindanao very soon.
This is really very good news especially since there are now 10 confirmed H1N1 virus cases in the country (and if I’m not mistaken, three people in the Caraga region, Mindanao are currently being suspected of carrying the deadly virus as well) Interestingly, it had to take a corporate giant like PAL to donate a working thermal scanner just so passengers using the Cagayan de Oro airport can be assessed for fever or flu or be more protected against the H1N1 virus. So exactly where’s the health department in all of these?
What about the local government?
I’m sure that more and more passengers from the Northern Mindanao area are now more anxious than ever for the opening of the Laguindingan International Airport.
Experience some atmosFEAR! Now who wouldn’t be curious with that? I am really, really looking forward to trying the Xcelerator zip line over at Davao City’s Outland Adventure this weekend! The Outland Adventure Xcelerator is supposedly the longest speed zipline in all of Asia! Cool, eh?
The Xcelerator is open everyday from 8am to 5 pm. Groups reservations available for weekdays. Fee is P300.00 per adult. They grant a 50 percent discount for small children if they’re riding in tandem with an adult.
Outland Adventure is right across the GAP Farm along the Diversion Road in Ma-a, Davao City, Mindanao.

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, MINDANAO – I was back in Cagayan de Oro City a.k.a. the City of Golden Friendship last Saturday, May 23, 2009 for the TM Astigfest event at Lim Ket Kai Parking Lot E (right across the Robinson’s Mall CDO) My boys, the members of Cagayan de Oro City-based Southrace Band, were set to perform that night.
The TM ASTIGFEST Cagayan de Oro event, which banners their Republika ng TM battlecry, saw the presence of TM endorser Cesar Montano and the performances of Aegis, Itchyworms and Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity alumnae Budoy and his band Junior Kilat. Naturally, my Southrace boys and I were super excited to be a part of such a big event!
I was also very happy to see Budoy and Jai (former drummer of Cebuano band Urbandub and now drummer cum manager of Junior Kilat) again — I hired this band to perform in three previous events that I organized. Unfortunately, Junior Kilat now has a pretty different member line-up — Gina is no longer the keyboardist (she’s now married and is pretty busy with her business, Jai said), Bangin, the turntablist, is already based in Japan, Arcie, their guitarist is now in Dumaguete and Diana, their former drummer, is already based in the U.S. Still, I’m glad that I was able to meet and work with them. Can’t wait to hire Junior Kilat again soon!

So all right, before I totally digress…Luckily, the weather that Saturday was good (although it was searing hot in the afternoon!). My boys had their sound check at around 4 pm. Lucky for me, too, when I realized that I knew some of the staff members of the sound and lights equipment provider that the organizers hired! So of course my boys were assisted well, the lights during my boys’ actual performance were amazing and we were able to leave our equipment with the crew
I tell you, there’s really nothing like being nice to the people that you work with because you’ll never know when you’ll see them and need their help
Anyways, the TM ASTIGFEST event that day was hosted by MOR CDO bigwig Bernie Bitok Bitok and ABS-CBN Kapamilya Mag-TV Na! Ato Ni! host (and one of my photographer brother’s favorite models) Maxine Monasterio. Cesar, meanwhile, was busy touring Gaisano Mall and Lim Ket Kai Mall (actually, my boys and I caught him during his Lim Ket Kai mall visit…people were screaming when Cesar came!). He joined the evening activities at around 9pm. Southrace, Itchyworms and Junior Kilat provided the musical performances early in the evening.
Here are some of the photos this Mindanao photographer (me!) took during the event: (in case you need a Mindanao-based photographer and/or a videographer to cover your weddings, events etc, please don’t hesitate to LEAVE A MESSAGE HERE or contact (+63) 919 238 6575 / (+63) 922 478 5218 – thankies!:

Let’s not forget the kidnapped teachers in Basilan, Mindanao please

Amid all the “controversies” these days — from Dr. Vicki Belo’s former flame Dr. Hayden Kho’s sex video scandal to the two confirmed cases of A H1N1 in the country to Brillante Mendoza’s amazing win as Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival, it seems that we don’t hear of any updates with regard to the six teachers that are still being held hostage in Basilan, Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).
I find this very, very unfortunate.
While it’s true that to not talk much about the hostage taking may be good for the government’s strategy to retrieve the hostages, one cannot also help but think if all the “current controversies” merely “cover” the more important and more pressing issues.
Last I heard, there’s a Basilan crisis management committee that’s handling the matter. I really hope they’re doing their job — school is about to start and I’m sure these teachers would have wanted to be with their students. And I’m praying that none of the teachers is in bad health condition or is ill.
These six teachers (Freires Quizon, Raphael Mayonado, Janette de los Reyes, Noemi Mandi, Jocelyn Inion and Jocelyn Enriquez), who are allegedly being held hostage by the Abu Sayyaf, have been in captivity for five long months now.
What about you…do you think that the government is doing its job in trying to save these Filipino teachers?
