Davao City plastic ban on

I first shared this info about the proposed plastic ban in Davao City last May 2012. Today, I’m so happy to let you all know that the Davao City plastic ban ordinance is now being implemented!

Davao City has started to implemented the ban against non-biodegradable plastics and styrofoam materials. The Davao City plastic ban started last June 28, 2012. The measure is in line with the city’s Ecological Solid Waste Management efforts.

Not all plastics are banned, however. You can still use BIODEGRADABLE plastics in Davao City. You are also very much welcome to use paper bags and other biodegradable packing materials as well.

Although the rules and regulations with regard to the plastic ban in Davao City were finalized in 2010 and the business establishments in Davao City were given time to prepare their shift to biodegradable plastics, several establishments still received tickets on the very first day of the implementation. Pretty much expected, I must say. However, I’m sure everything will be well in the next few weeks. After all, Davao City did introduce the firecracker ban and the no spitting ordinance. Initially, several offenders got caught but later on, people got disciplined and learned to abide by the law.

According to the city ordinance banning non-biodegradable plastic bags and polystyrene foams:

First offense: Php 300 fine and offender/s must attend a seminar on solid waste management
Second offense: Php 500 fine or perform a five-day community service
Third offense: Php 1,000 fine or perform a ten-day community service
If more than 3 offenses: Higher fine and may be subject to time in jail of up to six months

Also, according to the ordinance, only recyclable, reusable or biodegradable containers are allowed to be used as food and beverage containers.

As a Dabawenyo, I must say BRAVO, BRAVO, BRAVO! I’m so proud of my hometown! Go Davao!
