So finally, Mindanaoan has met Ettore “Thor” Dulay!
Thor, a fellow Dabawenyo (and so of course is also a fellow Mindanaoan), is one of the country’s most talented vocalists. From starting out in a Davao City vocal group to recording an album with a hit single entitled “Wonderland” (this song held the number spot at Wave 89.1’s show “Soul Review” for 5 straight weeks) to recording a song for the 2003 Metro Manila Film Festival entry “Fantastic Man” to basically being one of the most sought after singers in Metro Manila today, Thor has definitely gone a long way.
So okay, here’s the lowdown — even before our unplanned, fateful meeting last December 22, 2009 (right in the middle of the OTG gig of RnB band K24/7), Thor and I have been in touch through online and SMS. I have heard of him way, way back through members of South Border (I’ll write about them here in Mindanaoan.com, too) and of course, when I learned that he, too, was from Davao City, I made a mental note to meet him someday and tell him how he’s made all of us Mindanaoans proud.
Fast forward a few years later, and as fate would place a nice twist to things, my very good and pretty friend Mai became his “special someone.” Mai and I met through South Border, too, as both of us are passionate fans of the band. So there — Thor and I finally had a mutual friend!
Even if Thor and Mai were based in Manila and I, at the time, was already back in Mindanao, we didn’t lose touch. When I needed Thor’s help during one of my World AIDS Day events, Mai helped him create Thor’s video greeting. I then used that video greeting and played that during my WAD event
And then of course we also kept in touch through various social networking sites.
And finally, on December 22, 2009, after years of connecting only through the virtual world, I met my longtime “virtual” (now IRL) friend Thor
Ah, nothing beats meeting a friend for the very first time, yes?
Here’s a video clip of Thor singing “One Last Cry.” Took this one when he jammed alongside K24/7:
Want to buy furniture or jewelry this holiday season? Thinking of Christmas gift ideas? Why not buy furniture or jewelry pieces from Mindanaoan Ann Tiukinhoy Pamintuan? Because if I only could, I definitely would!
This Filipino-Chinese Dabawenya, who’s part of the prominent Pamintuan clan in Davao City, is part of the Movement 8 alliance composed of various Filipino designers. Ann’s works have invaded New York, Moscow, London and Sweden.
Ann Tiu Pamintuan holds the distinction of being the very first female Asian designer to be featured in the International Design Yearbook. Not bad for someone who actually doesn’t have any formal training in design. In fact, this passion for design started out as a hobby of hers. Amazing, eh?
So far, this gold mango bangle by Ann T. Pamintuan is one of my favorites:

I just love the craftsmanship! I want, I want, I want one for Christmas!
I also love these furniture pieces:

Did you know that several Mindanaoans will gun for national political positions come May 2010? If you’re the type of person who wants to support fellow children of Mindanao in the next presidential elections, then you may want to check out the list below.
Among the vice presidentiables, two are Mindanaoans. Bangon Pilipinas’ vice presidential candidate Perfecto Yasay, Jr. is from Davao City. Jay Sonza, the vice presidential candidate of the Kilusang Bagong Lipunan party, is also from Davao. All of Sonza’s children are fellow Ateneo de Davao University alumni.
As for the senatorial candidates, on the other hand, Mindanaoan has identified 10.
First is Nacionalista Party’s bet lawyer Adel A. Tamano of Lanao del Sur. He’s the first Filipino Muslim scholar graduate of Harvard Law School, the first Filipino Muslim commencement speaker of Harvard University and the President of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila. Atty. Adel Tamano is the son of the late Senator Mamintal Tamano. He was one of our valued speakers during the recently concluded Mindanao Bloggers Summit 3.
Second is Gwendolyn Pimentel-Gana, the daughter of Senator Aquilino Pimentel and sister of former senatorial candidate Atty. Koko Pimentel. She’s running under the PDP-Laban party and serves as her father’s chief of staff. Miss Gana will apparently use her Pimentel maiden name during the campaign.
Third is incumbent Agusan del Sur congressman Rodolfo “Ompong” Plaza. Rep. Plaza was also one of our valued speakers during the MBS 3. Recognized as the author of the landmark LPG Act, congressman Plaza comes from a large political clan in the Agusan area.
Fourth Mindanaoan senatoriable is Silvestre Bello III of Davao City. My fellow Dabawenyo will run under the LAKAS CMD KAMPI party. He was a former Justice secretary.
