Mindanao is my native land. This is where I belong, feel secure and am at peace. To be in Mindanao is to feel the embrace of a warm, soft blanket.

Mindanaoan - Blogging the REAL Mindanao!

Tangub City did it again! The Tribu Sinanduloy, entry of Tangub City, Misamis Occidental, Mindanao to the Sinulog 2010 streetdancing competition this year, bagged the top plum anew. Tribu Sinanduloy is the defending champion for the Sinulog-based category. And to add another feather to their cap, Tribu Sinanduloy also bagged the street dancing award!

Tangub City has bagged nine championship trophies since they first joined the Cebu festival in 1994. Their Sinulog 2010 victory is their ninth.

The dancers from Tangub City, Mindanao highlighted bountiful harvest blessed by Sto. Nino, the patron saint of Cebu City. Tribu Sinanduloy of Tangub brought with them large scarecrows, a carabao, neon green bamboo and other bright, attractive props.

The huge crowd at the Cebu City Sports Center was so impressed with their performance that many people at the bleachers gave them a standing ovation. Those at the VIP section also stood up and waved at the dancers after their rousing performance.

Tangub City officials led by mayor Jennifer Tan received the P1 Million cash prize – P500,000 for winning the Sinulog-based category and another P500,000 for the street dancing competition.

Tan, along with the Tribu Sinanduloy choreographer and other city officials, accepted the prizes Monday during the awarding ceremonies held at Cebu City Sports Center (Abellana).

Reports here in Cebu City say that at least 8 million people joined the Sinulog@30 2010 festivities. Authorities say that 3.5 million watched the Sinulog grand parade Sunday.

Five Mindanao cities and towns were among this year’s awardees in “Galing Pook.” The Galing Pook Awards 2009 is sponsored by the Galing Pook Foundation and aims to highlight the innovative and practical approaches to common local development challenges.

Galing Pook Awards also aims to highlight the best practices that actually worked in a Philippine town.

The 5 Mindanaoan areas that received the prestigious Galing Pook awards were Midsayap, North Cotabato; Surallah, North Cotabato; Sarangani, Malaybalay City, Bukidnon and Valencia City, Bukidnon.

Foundation chairman Rafael Coscuela said this year’s GPF awardees were chosen from 123 nominations by a national selection committee chaired by prominent economist Solita Monsod based on “innovation, positive results, transferability, sustainability, efficiency and people’s participation.”

To the local leaders of all Mindanao Galing Pook 2009 awardees — congratulations to all of you and keep up the very good work! :)

Looking for a Google Wave invitation? Then read on…:)

Mindanaoan has been using Google Wave for the past few weeks…and all I can say is…WOW. In case you haven’t heard, Google Wave is an online tool for real-time communication and collaboration. Yep, the key there is REAL TIME.

Through Google Wave, for instance, I can now communicate with my fellow writers and they can help edit my work in real time, they can share related photos or maps with me in real time and they can also format my article the way they want it or the way that it should be.

So for very busy newsrooms, for instance, this can certainly be an advantage because there will no longer be a need for a writer to email an article to the editor and then for the editor to email back the proofread document. Google Wave helps lessen efforts and helps reduce time and energy. A Google Wave is — get this — LIVE. So you can basically see someone as he or she edits your work and see someone as he or she types.

How cool is that?!

And yep, you can also share Google Waves.

More about Google Wave here.

That said, let me share the good news. Google Wave is by invitation only at this point but Mindanaoan is giving away Google Wave invites!

I only have a limited number of free Google Wave invitations so get one now! All you need to do is leave a comment under this post (don’t forget to enter your valid email address in the email address field). That’s all there is to it! I will then include your email address in my Google Wave invitation list :)

Ready? GO!

Mindanaoan band EEVEE bagged the top prize in the recently concluded Nescafe 3in1 Soundskool 2009 finals held in Manila. EEVEE, which represented the Philippine Women’s College of Davao City, bested 13 other groups from all over the Philippines. EEVEE received P250,000.00 cash, an exclusive recording contract with Sony Music Philippines and their school, PWC, will receive P100,000.00 worth of music equipment.

A few days before the grand finals, EEVEE and the 12 other bands underwent workshops in Boracay. They were all briefed on the ins and outs of the Philippine music industry, coached on songwriting techniques and performance styles.

EEVEE is composed of Enzo Villegas, Paolo Raymundo Segura, Craig Neniel and Jerick Adrian Sy.

Mindanaoan had the chance to meet these talented boys during the regional finals of Nescafe Soundskool 2009 in Cagayan de Oro City, Mindanao. EEVEE grabbed the crowd’s attention (and mine!) when they belted out their fun original composition, “Gusto Ko Lang Ng Girlfriend.”

After the competition, Enzo told me that they were hoping for the best. “Whether we win or not, all we want is that our music will be heard,” he said.

Well, their wish has been granted!

I wish EEVEE the best and I hope to work with these guys very soon! :)

Meanwhile, the two other Mindanaoan bands that participated in the national finals were Xavier University’s Little School House and St. Michael’s College’s Disco, Disco, Disco.

Little School House band of Xavier University was reportedly declared the People’s Choice awardee.

The 2009 Nescafe 3in1 Soundskool holds the theme “Huwag Na Magtago! Magparamdam Ka Na!” Supporters of this annual event include the Commission on Higher Education, Sony Music Entertainment Philippines, Paseo de Bahamas, Rudy Project, Boracay Scuba, Boracay Mandarin Island Hotel, Ix Chel, La Carmela de Boracay Resort Hotel and Parkmall Mandaue Cebu.

The Nescafe 3in1 Soundskool is an inter-collegiate competition open to young, unsigned bands in the Philippines. Nescafe 3in1 Soundskool, which has committed itself to discovering the best college bands and helping them become famous, has produced some of the country’s hottest young bands including last year’s winner Letter Day Story and Hilera. NESCAFÉ 3in1 Soundskool aims to support the artistic passions of young Pinoy musicians all over the country.
