Typhoon Sendong (international name: Washi) claimed thousands of lives, left tens of thousands of homes damaged (some damaged beyond repair, some totally wiped out) and basically left so much destruction in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan - two cities in Northern Mindanao, Philippines. Both cities are still trying to cope - so much still needs to be done. Still, I'm happy to share with you all that amid ongoing relief and rehabilitation operations, there also are movements from various sectors of society to REBUILD both cities. In Cagayan de Oro City in particular, there's a movement called "Barog, Kagay-anon" (Move, Kagay-anon), a series of activities that aims to revive CDO tourism. Tourism, after all, can do wonders for a city. We all know that the more tourists, the better the economy and...

I've been tweeting about Typhoon Sendong since yesterday, Saturday, December 17, 2011. You can see my Mindanaoan Twitter account here --- http://www.twitter.com/mindanaoan So much have happened ever since I woke up yesterday. Survived strong rains and winds, endured hours of brownout, found out that we didn't have water supply, found out that our humble house in Cagayan de Oro City also got damaged and that we have no choice but to face business losses. Still, my family and I have so much to be thankful for. All of us are safe. And all of us are alive and able to help out those in need. If you also want to do your share and help the victims of Typhoon Sendong (International Name: Tropical Storm Washi) in Cagayan de Oro City and Iligan City, Mindanao (where more than 500 persons are f...

I know, I know...this is a super delayed post. My apologies! I've been traveling a whole lot the past few days and I've also been very busy with some projects (more on these later). I do know, however, that I absolutely must write about this, no matter how briefly. My humble blog, Mindanaoan.com, was a NATIONAL FINALIST in the recently concluded 2011 Philippine Blog Awards! YEY! :D After being nominated in the Philippine Blog Awards 2011 - Mindanao, this Mindanao lifestyle blog was also declared as one of the finalists for the lifestyle category - national level. Review: Lord Byron’s Back Ribs Grill

Blogging, Cagayan de Oro City, Food, Mindanaoan Update, Opinion, Reviews
Tucked away at Aluba, Upper Macasandig, Cagayan de Oro City, Mindanao, Lord Byron's Back Ribs Grill CDO is the first ever Mindanao branch of this Bacolod restaurant. I'm not sure if setting up shop at Aluba is a good decision (since it's far from the city proper and from the malls i.e. where the "action" usually is) but I'm sure of one thing --- a trip to Lord Byron's Back Ribs Grill Cagayan de Oro is worth your time, effort and money. Along with some friends from the CDO Bloggers group, I paid this CDO restaurant a visit a few days ago. I've heard good feedback about this restaurant so off we went to have dinner there. Looking for the restaurant was a bit of a challenge since it was located in a largely residential area. If you're not from Cagayan de Oro or if you're not familiar wi...

I love coffee and I like staying in coffee shops. In Cebu, one of my favorite coffee shops is Coffee Dream. I often stay at their Ayala Cebu branch - the one at the 4th floor -, at their SM Cebu branch - the one within the old mall, fronting VECO - and during recent Cebu City visits, their booth at the Traveler's Lounge, also located at SM. While I know that they have branches in Mindanao (Cagayan de Oro City, Davao City and General Santos City), it's just unfortunate that I've never had the chance to visit one. Until a few days ago. Through the kindness and generosity of Sir Glenn and Miss Anna of Coffee Dream, I was able to visit Coffee Dream SM Cagayan de Oro. In fact, I was even able to bring along several blogger-friends, too! We visited the SM CDO branch of Coffee Dream on a Sa...

Review: Grilled steak and other dishes at Roadhouse Cafe

Bukidnon, Food, Malaybalay City, Mindanaoan Update, Opinion, Religion, Reviews
A few days ago,I accompanied a congressman-friend of mine as he made the rounds around his jurisdiction. It has been quite a while since I've done that --- you know, accompany a politician as he attends events, speak to his constituents, deliver speeches, meet key people etc. I sort of miss it, truth be told. But I digress. What I want to share with you all today are some food shots I took and a small review about Roadhouse Cafe. Forgive the lousy texture of the photos as I merely used a digital camera for these. As you guys know, I'm more comfortable sharing food photos taken with my trusty DSLR. Anyways, Roadhouse Cafe is one of my favorite restaurants in Mindanao. My favorite dishes in Roadhouse Cafe include their baby back ribs and their pumpkin soup. I even wrote a review about ...

I love, love, LOVE chocolates, pastries, sweets and cakes. I have a major, certified sweet tooth. I think I can't last an entire week without eating anything sweet - in fact, I just ate an entire pack of meringue before writing this post! (IKR) So I make it a point to either stock up on sweets or I regularly buy from friends or from my favorite pastry shops. Right before my Public Relations and Blogging speaking engagement in Cagayan de Oro City a few days ago, I chanced upon food photos taken by a fellow blogger, Shailini. She also happens to be an amazing cook/baker! I was practically drooling over these: I think I left comments on most of the photos she posted (I think I wanted to order everything!). Anyways, fast forward after my speaking engagement, you could just imag...

Review: Max’s Restaurant CDO

Business, Cagayan de Oro City, Commentary, Consumer, Food, Mindanaoan Update, Northern Mindanao, Opinion, Photos, Recipes, Reviews, Weird
I have a strange love affair with Max's Restaurant Cagayan de Oro City, Mindanao branch. My family and I used to be regular customers when the Max's Restaurant CDO branch was still in Divisoria. I even wrote about one of their promos before. I also used to treat a lot of my Public Relations clients there before. I also organized a few political events in their function rooms. However, after I read this negative feedback about Max's Cagayan de Oro by a CDO Blogger, I decided to stay away, lest that I myself would experience the same poor service. What happened between Max's Restaurant and the CDO Bloggers was a shame, really. I do know that the CDO Bloggers President then already issued an official response. Not sure if Max's management issued an apology or statement. Fast forward a year...

According to the Film Development Council of the Philippines, "Bourne Legacy" will shoot scenes in Manila, Philippines by January 2012. The movie is set for release sometime August 2012. To borrow the words of Rajo - this carb blocker is truly heaven sent! And how can it not be? CarbTrim Iced Tea Mix literally BLOCKS carbohydrates! Carb Trim Iced Tea Mix helps eliminate unwanted carbohydrates that eventually turn into pesky body fat. Now before I go any further, let me tell you guys that CarbTrim isn't available in the market YET...but do watch out for their commercial that's set to air on October 16, 2011. This carb blocker will also be available in the market this October 2011. Davao City, Davao Del Norte, Davao del Sur, Hotels, Mindanaoan Update, Reviews, Tourism, Travel
Looking for a cheap hotel in Davao City? If you need an affordable place to stay in Davao City, Mindanao, then you might want to consider a dormitel (dormitory + hostel/hotel). A dormitel may not have all the fancy amenities found in a hotel but it does offer the basics --- bed, washroom, shower, cable TV, aircon, wifi (in some cases). Just the right features for travelers who need a clean place to crash in and want value for their money. One Davao dormitel that you might want to check out is C5. Located along Roxas Avenue, C5 Dormitel Davao is just a block away from the Ateneo de Davao University campus along CM Recto. C5 Dormitel is also just a few steps away from the renowned Marco Polo Hotel Davao and the tourist favorite Aldevinco Shopping Mall. So location is pretty good. C5 Do...

I'm a certified Dabawenya (from Davao City) and although I can say that there are a lot of projects going on at my hometown (two of which are the Abreeza Mall, which managed to gather millions of people during the Kadayawan Festival 2011 celebration, and the Abreeza Residences, which according to reports will be adjacent to Kukun Hotel Davao City and a few meters away from Abreeza Mall), Cagayan de Oro City is where the action is these days, in my humble opinion. It's the most booming city in Mindanao and the most logical reason I could think of is the fact that the long-awaited Laguindingan International Airport is about to be finished. You know how it is --- once an international airport starts its operations, you'd know for sure that there will be more tourists, more business opportu...

My third trip to Hong Kong happened just a few days ago, thanks to Airphil Express. I love coming back to Hong Kong! Apart from the fact that we Filipinos don't need a visa to enter Hong Kong, this top Asian food and shopping destination always offers new and exciting things to do and discover for tourists. Hong Kong has a super efficient transport system, offers fascinating food, has a number of picture-perfect tourist spots and irresistible shopping sales! Yep, Hong Kong is love :) Now my most recent trip to Hong Kong was a pretty extra special overseas trip because: 1) it was the inaugural flight of the much-awaited Airphil Express Cebu to Hong Kong route (woohoo!) 2) it was a trip that was also made extra special by the Hong Kong Tourism Board 3) it was a trip where ...

A lot of people shared their reactions to the news that the senator from Bukidnon and fellow Mindanaoan Senator Migs Zubiri will resign amid allegations of poll fraud claims. However, although I was privy to some important details, I refused to confirm anything pending the privilege speech of Senator Miguel Zubiri before the Senate plenary, which happened today, August 3, 2011. A few days ago, this blogger in Mindanao received an invitation from Airphil Express. The invitation came a few weeks after my brother, cousins and I flew to Singapore and Malaysia (yes, yes, I flew there again :) If you guys remember, I treated my mom to a special mother-daughter trip abroad last February 2011) aboard --- quite coincidentally --- Airphil Express :) It was an invitation that was very hard to turn down --- it was a chance for me to be on board the special maiden flight of Airphil Express' Cebu to Hong Kong route! Yes, folks, Airphil Express now has Cebu to Hong Kong flights! Now, Hong Kong is more accessible not only for people in the Visayas but for fellow Mindanaoans as well. I'm pretty excited with this Hong Kong trip. This will be my third time in beauti...
