Review: Camiguin Island Golden Sunset Beach Club

by Mindanaoan Irene. 6 Comments

The Camiguin Island Golden Sunset Beach Club is strategically located at Yumbing, Mambajao, Camiguin Island, Mindanao. I say strategic because apart from the fact that it is right within the vicinity of the island’s capital town, it is located in front of the famous White Island. So for those of you who want to spend more time at White Island instead of the other tourist attractions in Camiguin (also known as the Island Born of Fire), then Golden Sunset Beach Club Camiguin may be a viable choice.

I stayed at the Camiguin Island Golden Sunset Beach Club January of this year. The place is smaller compared to the other resorts in the island. However, this is probably why more people prefer to stay there. I found it discreet, private and clean. I heard that the resort has new owners and that they just tidied up the place – did a number of renovations and beefed up the marketing plan for the resort.

My companion and I stayed in an airconditioned room that had two single beds, a refrigerator and a television set. The TV had cable connection but there were only a few channels. It didn’t matter to us, though, since we didn’t go to Camiguin Island just to stay holed up in our room. We went there to explore and possibly see if our relatives, whom we haven’t seen in a long time, were still around. Anyway, the room was clean and decent. The bathroom was fine. Don’t forget to bring some toiletries, though, since the resort doesn’t offer much. We only got the small travel soap, one roll of tissue paper, one very small sachet of shampoo and towels. No slippers, no toothpaste.

Anyway, what I liked about the place was the fact that the staff members would really see to it that they help you as much as they can. When we told them that we wanted to hire a bangka that could bring us to and fro White Island, they were able to contact a bangkero right away. The good thing, too, was that we only paid P400.00 (that’s already round trip and good for 4 people) Pretty good deal, yes? Also, when we bought raw fish, shells and seafood at the Mambajao market, the staff members gladly offered to cook them. We only had to shell out P50.00 for the labor and for the cook to buy onion, garlic and other vegetables.

Another one of Golden Sunset’s plus is their swimming pool. I liked the fact that I could easily take a dip in the morning or after spending a long day at White Island or at Mantigue Island. Spending an extra hour at the pool before hitting the sack may help you relax and sleep better. One end of the pool is actually “connected” to a non-existent bar (which hopefully the management could revive one of these days).

The food and drinks at the resort are reasonably priced. Although if you do get a chance to buy some drinks at one of those groceries near the Mambajao Public Market, then do so. You can just then stock them up at the refrigerator inside your room.

During low season (June 1st to September 30th), a family fan room (sleeps six) will only cost you anywhere between P1,100 and P1,250. During the peak season (October 1st to May 31st), on the other hand, an overnight stay in an airconditioned room with television and refrigerator will cost between P1,600 and P1,800. These room rates are based on single and double occupancies. They will charge P400.00 for every additional person in the room.

Check out time is at 12 noon while you can check in at any time of the day. Be sure to call them beforehand, though, as the rooms are limited.

Sen. Chiz Escudero proposes 20 years imprisonment for criminally negligent bus drivers

      by Mindanaoan Irene. 0 Comments

Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero has proposed that bus drivers who commit criminal negligence in road mishaps should face twenty (20) years of imprisonment. This, in the wake of a lot of vehicular accidents as of late.

The senator from Sorsogon, who currently chairs both the Senate Committee on Ways and Means and the Senate Committee on Justice and Human Rights, introduced Senate Bill Number 2701 (SBN 2701) which aims to provide more teeth to existing preventive policies to achieve safety benefits. SBN 2701 penalizes criminal negligence committed by common carriers with reclusion temporal, or twelve (12) years to twenty (20) years in prison, in case of death.

Common carriers’ criminal liability is found in Article 365 of the Revised Penal Code, Criminal Negligence, which provides as penalty of imprisonment arresto mayor to prision correccional or from one (1) month to four (4) years and two (2) months, depending on the gravity of the resultant crime or felony.

I don’t know about you but I think the number of recent road accidents is really very alarming.

Here in Mindanao, for instance, 15 people died in a road accident in Dangcagan, Bukidnon last week. A 10-wheeler truck rammed into an L300 van, leaving all of its 15 passengers plus driver dead. I actually just got word from my sources in Dangcagan that the truck owner can only afford to give P10,000.00 (roughly US $250.00) to each of the passengers. Isn’t that so pathetic?

So now, given this new move from Senator Chiz, I do hope that our roads become safer and our drivers become more responsible.

What do you think of this proposed legislation?
