Kim Atienza becomes Philippine Eagle Champion

Advocacy, Announcements, Broadcasting, Davao City, Features, Journalism, Media, Mindanaoan Update, Personalities, Society
Great news from Davao City, Mindanao! Look who's the newest champion of the Philippine Eagle! It's none other than Kim Atienza, the son of former Manila Mayor Lito Atienza and host of educational program "Matanglawin" (aired via ABS CBN Channel 2). The Philippine Eagle Foundation, with head offices in my hometown Davao City, recently announced that Kim Atienza is the newest champion of the endangered national bird. Quite fitting, actually, since Atienza is an environmentalist, an animal lover and of course, the host of "Matanglawin." Kim Atienza is also the "weather dude" in primetime newscast TV Patrol and early morning show Umagang Kay Ganda. Atienza was recently in Davao City to attend the Agila Gala program, where he was installed as the newest champion of the beloved Phili...

My “Sharon” taping experience. Fun and disappointing at the same time

Before you read this, though, have you read my previous entry? You may want to check out Mindanaoan artist Laarni Lozada's cool makeover (saw her in person during the "Sharon" taping). I must say, it's good to see a Mindanaoan singer doing pretty good in her chosen career and that she's doing well in Manila, too, so it seems. Kudos to Laarni! Anyways, on to my kuwento about my "Sharon" taping experience. Thanks to Miss Bing, I got passes enough for 5 people to watch the April 18, 2010 taping of Sharon Cuneta's show. Although it wasn't my first time to watch "Sharon," I still felt excited especially since I towed some of my friends along. I was the self-proclaimed ABS CBN complex tour guide of sorts that day --- we went to the cafeteria (where, during my days working in ABS CBN Manila, a...

Sultan Kudarat, Mindanao's pride and the Pinoy Dream Academy grand dreamer Laarni Lozada sure has gone a long way from singing in a choir to financing her own studies to winning the big prize at ABS-CBN's talent-reality show PDA. Laarni Lozada, a fellow Mindanaoan, counts Sitti, Lea Salonga and Whitney Houston as among her singing idols. And now that she's a singing idol herself, Laarni of course has a new look. From this simple looking lass: to this diva: (more…)

Mindanaoan learned that the tickets to these two shows will be given out for free but I highly suggest that you get yours this early. Do call ABS CBN CDO to ask how you can avail of a ticket. Pinoy Big Brother 2009 – PBB Double Up – has two Mindanaoans

Davao City, Entertainment, General Santos City, Mindanaoan Update, Television
So the Pinoy Big Brother 2009 PBB Double Up finally conducted its "magical reveal" of this year's housemates last night. Mindanaoan was able to watch parts of the show, which was hosted by Toni Gonzaga, Bianca Gonzales and Mariel Rodriguez. Thankfully, there are two Mindanaoan housemates this year. One is Melisa Cantiveros from General Santos City and the other is Marielle Sorino, a fellow Dabawenyo. Both are 21 years old. Melisa is dubbed as "Inday Kengkay" and is an aspiring teacher (during her brief interview, she spoke in English...with very good intonation, I must say!) while Marielle is a single mother and admitted to having been "rebellious" before - i.e. she drank and frequently partied and as a consequence, encountered conflicts with her parents especially her mom. The ...

The Kapamilya Karavan 2009 in Cagayan de Oro City, Mindanao was a major success! The fun event, which was made possible by ABS CBN and SM City CDO, was held last August 28, 2009 (the very day CDO celebrated the Kagay-An Festival 2009!) at the Gran Via Lot, Pueblo de Oro. Virtually thousands and thousands of people came to watch the free show, which was the organizers' way of thanking the public for their continuous support. Mindanaoan was there because I was tapped to book two local bands (thank you, ABS CBN Manila!) Mindanaoan was also one of the official event photographers :) [the other one that I got was my brother hehe...but of course, right? :) ] Check out some of the photos that I took during the Kapamilya Karavan event in Cagayan de Oro below. Apart from the M.O.R. deejays an...

John Lloyd Cruz, Rivermaya to headline Kapamilya Karavan in Cagayan de Oro City, Mindanao

Announcements, Cagayan de Oro City, Entertainment, Events, Fiesta, Mindanaoan Update, Music, News, Northern Mindanao, Personalities, Society
ABS-CBN Kapamilya star John Lloyd Cruz and popular band Rivermaya will headline the much-awaited Kapamilya Karavan - Cagayan de Oro on August 28, 2009 at Gran Via Lot, SM CDO, Cagayan de Oro City, Mindanao. This fun musical event will be held on the very same day Cagayan de Oro City celebrates its fiesta. Expect legions of fans to watch John Lloyd and other Kapamilya stars on August 28! Of course, the ABS CBN Cagayan de Oro family, M.O.R. CDO family and some representatives from ABS CBN Manila will be at the event. This early, not a few have already told me that they'll be at the venue early so that they can situate themselves near the stage. Sabagay...who wouldn't want to be up close and personal with Mr. Ingat himself? Mindanaoan was tapped to book two local artists that will s...

Joey De Leon, Vic Sotto react to Willie Revillame’s decision to have the live feed of President Cory’s cortege removed

Controversial, Internet, Journalism, Media, Mindanaoan Update, Personalities, Technology, Videos
I just knew that it would only take a matter of time before Joey de Leon, one of the hosts in the GMA 7 noontime show "Eat Bulaga," gives his (violent) reaction on the controversial decision of Willie Revillame to have the live feed of President Cory Aquino's cortege from La Salle Greenhills to Manila Cathedral removed. The cortege was aired simultaneously with Revillame's noontime show "Wowowee" aired via ABS CBN Channel 2. We all know that Joey and Willie aren't exactly "good friends" so I guess this "parinig" that he made, along with co-host Vic Sotto, is but expected of Joey de Leon. Check out the video below. Notable line --- "ang baboy, kahit pagsuotin mo pa yan ng ginto, baboy pa rin" OUCH.

Share your Maalaala Mo Kaya story at Limketkai Mall

Announcements, Arts, Cagayan de Oro City, Entertainment, Mindanaoan Update, Movies, Northern Mindanao
"Maalaala Mo Kaya," a drama anthology program aired via ABS-CBN Channel 2, will visit Cagayan de Oro City, Mindanao! On August 7 to 9, 2009 at the Limketkai Mall in CDO, the staff of ABS-CBN's "Maalaala Mo Kaya" will be on hand to accept letters and stories from the public. Selected stories may then be featured in future "Maalaala Mo Kaya" episodes. The stories and letters will be accepted during mall hours. Will a Mindanaoan's story be the next to be featured in MMK? I remember that the 1994 Maalaala Mo Kaya movie starring Richard Gomez, Aiko Melendez and Chin Chin Gutierrez was based on a story of a Mindanaoan - a Davao City resident. That was a pretty controversial film, too, as some people apparently wanted to question the veracity of the story. Anyways, if you want to share y...

So this is how it feels when Piolo Pascual greets you

I must admit, I'm kilig to the bones. Although I know by heart every single word Piolo Pascual said in this video greeting that he did (I should because I wrote the words LOL), I still cannot help but feel giddy. Piolo is Piolo! And he has always been very nice to me...so I have nothing but respect and admiration for the man. The last time I spoke to him was when I watched the ASAP show live at ABS-CBN Manila late last year. And I tell you, he really is one charmer! :D Check out the video greeting he did for his "fellow Bukidnons" (he, along with "Love Me Again - Land Down Under" co-star Angel Locsin, is an adopted child of the Province of Bukidnon) in time for the Kaamulan 2009. Piolo's looking dapper in that video, don't you think? Thank you very much to Miss Mariole and Miss Lulu ...

Angela Batumbakal finally sends a reply and yes, she needs money

Controversial, Mindanaoan Update, Musings, Opinion, Personal
This post is related to an earlier entry about this girl who sent me an email and claimed that she has photos of award-winning Filipino actor Baron Geisler and a girl smoking marijuana. The email sender calls herself "Angela Batumbakal." And since I was intrigued by her email, I sent her a brief reply asking, "and I suppose you're asking for money?" (Well, truth be told, I knew from the get-go that she needed money in exchange for these photos of former Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity contestant Baron Geisler and a girl smoking marijuana but admittedly, I was curious and a bit baffled as to how people can go through such lengths just to earn that quick buck) Today, I checked my email and I finally received a short confirmation from "Angela Batumbakal": "ofcourse in exchange for d pictur...

Baron Geisler and a girl smoking marijuana – caught on camera?

Controversial, Entertainment, Mindanaoan Update, Musings, Opinion, Personal
I received a rather weird (yet interesting, I must admit) offer via email yesterday. A girl who introduced herself as a certain "Angela Batumbakal" claimed that she has photos of "Jay" indie film lead actor Baron Geisler and another woman (unnamed) smoking marijuana. I found her email "interesting" only because I realize the lengths people go through just so they can either destroy a person or earn that quick buck. This "Angela Batumbakal" wrote: i have 5 clear pictures of baron geisler and a woman smoking marijuana.i found a memory card at an internet cafe and then i opened it and saw baron's pictures on it.if u are interested to have these pictures,u can send me an email.09099758776 [[email protected]] I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who received her so-called "offer," wh...

Bukidnon’s Kaamulan Festival 2009 official schedule of activities

Announcements, Bukidnon, Events, Festivals, Fiesta, Kaamulan Festival, Mindanaoan Update, Tourism, Travel
The official schedule of the Province of Bukidnon's Kaamulan Festival 2009 celebration is finally out! This Kaamulan 2009 celebration sked was furnished by the Bukidnon Tourism Office of the Provincial Government of Bukidnon. The Kaamulan Festival is the largest festival in Bukidnon and is largely recognized as the only remaining authentic ethnic festival in the Philipines. Kaamulan is an indigenous Bukidnon term for “'gathering for any purpose.'" It can also mean a datuship ritual, a wedding ceremony, a thanksgiving festival during harvest time, a peace pact, or all of these together. Bukidnon's Kaamulan Festival, which began in the year 1977, is an ethnic festival featuring the province of Bukidnon’s seven (7) hill tribes namely Tala-andig, Higaonon, Umayamnon, Manobo, Tigwahanon, ...

Love Me Again (Land Down Under) opens today

Bukidnon, Entertainment, Mindanaoan Update, Movies
The latest offering of Star Cinema, ABS-CBN Channel 2's film production outfit, is set to open in theaters nationwide today, January 15, 2009. "Love Me Again (Land Down Under)," which stars Angel Locsin and Piolo Pascual, will be shown in theaters nationwide starting today --- unfortunately (and ironically, I guess?) it won't be shown in the very province that they shot the movie in. "Love Me Again" won't be shown in Bukidnon, Mindanao, Philippines for the mere reason that there aren't ANY movie houses or theaters in the Province of Bukidnon. The latest Star Cinema movie was partly shot in the scenic province of Bukidnon. The movie, which is reportedly part of Star Cinema’s 15th Year Anniversary celebration, was partly shot in Bukidnon particularly in the Municipality of Impasug-ong, in...

Bukidnon anticipates “Love Me Again (Land Down Under)” but needs to go to CDO or Davao to view film

Bukidnon, Entertainment, Features, Mindanao, Mindanaoan Update, Movies
Residents of Bukidnon Province, Mindanao are highly anticipating the showing of the Angel Locsin-Piolo Pascual starrer "Love Me Again (Land Down Under)" come January 15, 2009. However, there's one catch - they need to either travel to Cagayan de Oro City (which is roughly 2 hours away from Bukidnon's capital city Malaybalay) or Davao City (which is about 5 hours away by land) OR wait for the DVD version of the movie (hopefully some won't resort to buying pirated copies of the film!). You see, there aren't any movie houses or cinemas in the entire province of Bukidnon. After the Belyca cinema in Malaybalay City closed down years ago, no other movie house has operated in the capital city of the said province that's considered the food basket of Mindanao. (I actually remember those days wh...

Filipino version of Twilight: Takipsilim is this for real?

Bukidnon, Entertainment, Mindanaoan Update, Movies, News
Good Lord, did ABS-CBN Channel 2 really pay US $1 Million (that's roughly 47 million pesos!) to be able to do a so-called "remake" of the hit movie "Twilight"? The Lopez family-owned broadcasting network will reportedly co-produce with Ignite Media a Filipino version of the movie Twilight. Can you seriously, SERIOUSLY imagine Rayver Cruz as Edward Cullen and Shaina Magdayao as Isabella "Bella" Swan? OMG - the Philippines will seriously be the laughing stock of the entire world if this will push through! And get this - the Twilight Pinoy version will be entitled "Takipsilim" (DUH!) The taping will reportedly start by February 2009. The Province of Bukidnon, which recently played host to the cast and crew of the Star Cinema production "Love Me Again (Land Down Under)", will reportedly...

Review: Da Spooftacular Showdown (featuring Jon Santos, John “Sweet” Lapus, Candy Pangilinan and guest Pokwang)

Arts, Entertainment, Humor, Mindanaoan Artists, Mindanaoan Update
It was a chilly Friday night (November 14, 2008) when my mom and I went to watch the ASAP Live-produced and Phillip Lazaro-directed “Da Spooftacular Showdown” comedy show featuring top Filipino comedians Jon Santos, John “Sweet” Lapus, Candy Pangilinan and Pokwang (who was that week’s guest). We arrived at Music Museum, Greenhills two hours early, which was fine since we wanted to have dinner beforehand. We spotted former Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition winner Keanna Reeves, by the way. She, along with a much younger guy, stayed in front of the Starbucks joint near the Music Museum entrance. She looked restless and seemed to know that people around her were staring at her and talking about her. Who wouldn’t be when she was wearing a very sexy attire? It was just really amusing when so...

Tales from the Piolo Pascual – Angel Locsin Bukidnon movie shoot

Bukidnon, Entertainment, Features
Three weeks after the entire cast of the tentatively titled "Land Down Under" movie arrived here in the Province of Bukidnon, the Piolo Pascual and Angel Locsin Bukidnon cowboy movie fever is still on. Several exciting tales, funny anecdotes and clearly soon-to-be urban legends/tales have begun to sprout. From university students who still seem to be tickled pink because Piolo smiled at them to teachers who pretended not to care when they saw Piolo at a restaurant (but excitedly shared their experience with fellow teachers and to their eager students) to a local family that got a substantial amount of money in exchange for his humble bahay kubo, the tales have spread and the locals merrily discuss the stories every single day. Naturally, the Municipality of Impasug-ong, noted as t...
