So two students of Ateneo de Cagayan University (Xavier University, Cagayan de Oro City, Mindanao) have committed suicide in the past few weeks.

Roldan Bacadon, who graduated magna cum laude no less, committed suicide last Black Saturday. He allegedly drank poison and was allegedly depressed.

A few weeks later, 20-year old Iphraim dela Cruz, a Xavier University Nursing student hanged himself to death. Again, it was allegedly because of depression. Dela Cruz allegedly got a failing grade.

Observers are now asking: is it high time for Xavier University to re-examine their standards? Is it high time for the school to re-evaluate their teachers? Or are these student-suicides just two unfortunate random incidents?

Is Xavier University to blame for these suicides?

What are your thoughts?

xu_graduationI attended a very special ceremony at the Xavier University (Ateneo de Cagayan) last weekend.

My youngest brother graduated from college last Saturday, March 21, 2009. Yay! I’m really very proud of him.

He was one of the graduates who marched and received their diplomas in the afternoon (2nd batch).

The afternoon batch was composed of graduates from the colleges of Agriculture, Law, Engineering, Graduate School etc.

I haven’t attended a graduation ceremony in years so I was a bit worried that it might take a lot of time (I remember my college graduation took about 4 hours!). Thankfully, the Ateneo de Cagayan graduation ceremonies that day started on time (3:30 pm) and ended roughly 2 hours and a half later.

The graduation rites were orderly although I was a bit baffled as to why the parents/guardians had to stay at the 2nd floor bleachers of the Xavier University Gymnasium when there were empty lower bleachers. Check out the photo I took.

I also learned that the graduation ceremony was being webcast live. Xavier University President Fr. Jose Villarin, SJ announced this during his message to the graduates. He said that there were roughly 250 people who viewed the graduation ceremony in the morning (1st batch). Ah, graduation ceremonies are now high-tech! This is good, of course, since alumni members around the world can watch the graduation rites or if a certain graduate’s relatives can’t attend the ceremony, then they can just view the event online.

Hopefully other schools in the country, especially here in Mindanao, can follow suit.

To the graduates of Class 2009 – congratulations! And to my dear brother – you’re loved! I’m so proud of you :)

Sen. Pia Cayetano and Nino AlcantaraThe Philippine Senate recently formally commended Mindanaoan Francis Casey “Niño” Alcantara, the first Filipino Australian Open champ, via a resolution. Just this week, the senators unanimously adopted Senate Resolution Number 860 authored by Senator Pia Cayetano commending the country’s newest sports phenomenon. Alcantara recently nabbed the Junior Boys Doubles crown of the Australian Open Tennis Championships. Alcantara played alongside partner Cheng-Peng Hsiehtoi of Taiwan.

Alcantara, 17 years old, is a student of Xavier University (Ateneo de Cagayan University) in Cagayan de Oro City, Mindanao.

The son of a Bukidnon native (his mother Sarah is from Malaybalay City, Bukidnon, Mindanao), this young Mindanaoan is the very first Filipino to win a “Grand Slam” tennis tournament. * Nino, by the way, lost his father 6 years ago to cardiac arrest. *

“Niño’s hard work, dedication, discipline, and sportsmanship sets a good example and is an inspiration for the Filipino people,” Sen. Pia Cayetano said in her resolution.

“The distinction that Alcantara brings home is a source of national pride and inspiration for our people and our nation, especially the youth.”

Because of his recent Australian Open victory, Nino has raised his International Tennis Federation (ITF) junior rankings from No. 29 to No. 18. Plus what’s really very commendable is the fact that this Mindanaoan achieved this victory even while being a full-time senior high school student in Xavier University.

Nino is the only junior player in the world’s top 30 still in school. Amazing feat indeed!

CONGRATULATIONS NINO!

Below is the full text of Sen. Cayetano’s resolution, which she read before the chambers last February 3, 2009:

WHEREAS, Alcantara paired with 17-year-old Cheng-Peng Hsieh of Taiwan and together, they demolished Mikhal Biryukov of Russia and Yasutaka Uchiyama of Japan, 6-4, 6-2 to win the above-mentioned championship;

WHEREAS, Alcantara is the Philippines’ top-ranked junior player and is now No. 20 in the world in the 18-and-under circuit;
