Announcements, Bukidnon, Entertainment, Events, Malaybalay City, Music, Society
Pulse Music Club is perhaps the longest-standing live music venue and dance club in Cagayan de Oro City. So it wasn't much of a surprise that when I started sharing news that Pulse has plans of opening a branch in Malaybalay City, Bukidnon (which is about 2 hours away from CDO), a TON of people really got excited over the news. Read: Bukidnon Online - for the latest Bukidnon news Along with friends from the Bukidnon Bloggers, I got invited to the grand opening of Pulse Music Club Malaybalay last July 25, 2014. Located at Tabios Street corner Moreno Street, Pulse Music Club Malaybalay was jampacked that night! There were guest DJs, Pulse house ledge dancers, house DJs and a host who made sure that the crowd was entertained until the wee hours of the night. Thanks so...

Migs Zubiri: I’m quitting politics

Bukidnon, Business, News, Northern Mindanao, Personalities, Politics, Society
Former Senator and 3-term Bukidnon congressman Juan Miguel "Migs" Zubiri says he is quitting politics and will now just devote his time on being a businessman. Zubiri, who served as Bukidnon 3rd District representative for 3 consecutive terms and became Senate Majority Leader, recently launched a business venture in Bukidnon. He told Mindanaoan.com that he is "no longer interested in politics." "I have decided to invest my time and finances in the province that I love," he said. His latest business venture is an ice plant in Malaybalay City, the capital of Bukidnon, called Z-Ice Purified Ice. His father, Bukidnon Governor Jose Zubiri, Jr., wife Audrey and Malaybalay City local officials were present during the ribbon cutting ceremony. Zubiri's statement comes amid rampant chatt...

Kaamulan Festival 2014 in Bukidnon moved

Announcements, Bukidnon, Culture, Events, Tourism
The Kaamulan Festival 2014 in Bukidnon will now be celebrated the entire month of August. In the past few years, Bukidnon celebrates Kaamulan Festival every end of February to March 10, supposedly the day the province celebrates its founding anniversary. However, the Provincial Government of Bukidnon has recently passed a resolution stating that the founding anniversary should be celebrated every September. To clarify, however, Kaamulan Festival has been celebrated every August before. So I guess this development is more like a "homecoming" (to the original date!) of sorts :) The culmination of the 2014 Kaamulan Festival will be held on September 1. Highlight during that day will be the streetdancing competition, where all 20 municipalities and 2 cities of Bukidnon will send continge...

Last year, this Mindanaoan blogger had the most amazing opportunity to tour the USA courtesy of the US Embassy. I was chosen for the U.S. State Department's International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP), a program launched in 1940 that seeks to build mutual understanding between the U.S. and other nations through carefully-designed short-term visits to the U.S. for current and emerging foreign leaders. This year, a fellow Mindanaoan will have the chance to visit America. This time, to attend an international summer camp in the U.S. called "Camp Up With People." And what's also special about this is that the Mindanaoan is a young indigenous student :) Meet Arjean Marie Belco, who is from the Talaandig tribe in Bukidnon, Mindanao. It was a really long, tiring day. Woke up at 6 AM, which I rarely do, to start on the tasks. My hardworking staff members were still asleep, having only returned from their overnight propaganda tasks at 5 in the morning! Anyways, after hours of preparation, this was what happened the evening of March 2, 2013. Tens of thousands of people were already gathered at the Capitol Grounds in Malaybalay City, Bukidnon. I have to say, though - the Team UNA campaign rally in Bukidnon was a concert-slash-rally-slash-fireworks-display event. Since it was the Kaamulan Festival 2013, there was a telecom-sponsored concert that night (topbilled by Itchyworms and Tanya Markova) plus the much-awaited grand fireworks display. Yes, there were people who came to hear the Team UNA senatorial candidates speak ...

Warrant of arrest out for ex-Bukidnon rep Neric Acosta, mom Coring

Announcements, Bukidnon, Controversial, Government, Headline, News, Northern Mindanao, Politics
I received a phone call about two hours ago. It was a tip. Apparently, the Sandiganbayan Fifth Division has issued a warrant of arrest for former Bukidnon First District Congressman Juan Romeo Nereus "Neric" Acosta and his mother, former Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon mayor Socorro "Coring" Acosta. The warrant of arrest was made in connection with a perjury case filed against the Acostas. I was a bit surprised when I heard the news, actually. Especially since last I heard, the complainant, Fr. Venancio Balansag, Jr., has already withdrawn his complaint and has issued an affidavit of desistance. A brief backgrounder - graft and corruption charges as well as charges for violating the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials were filed against Neric Acosta and his mother. Th...

Creation of Bukidnon 4th District gets Senate OK

Bukidnon, Government, Malaybalay City, News, Northern Mindanao, Politics
The Senate has approved the bill seeking the creation of the Bukidnon 4th District. The Senate has approved on the 3rd and final reading House Bill 5236 which seeks the creation of the Bukidnon Fourth District. The bill was passed September 20, 2012. A total of 12 senators, led by Senator Bongbong Marcos who chairs the Committee on Local Government, OK'd the passage of the Bukidnon 4th District bill. Philippine President Benigno Aquino III still needs to sign the bill first, though, before it becomes a law. If the Bukidnon 4th District bill gets ratified, there will be a need for a congressman who will represent the said district. The proposed Bukidnon 4th District shall be composed of Valencia City, Kalilangan, and Pangantucan. Bukidnon 1st District will then be composed of...

I was in Bukidnon when San Juan Rep. JV Ejercito (or Joseph Victor Ejercito Estrada) told me that he was coming for a visit. I readily told Rep. JV Ejercito that I would be glad to assist him especially since I still had tons of media and government contacts in Bukidnon. I was also very curious to see how the people of Bukidnon would react when they see him. After all, JV Ejercito just recently "patched things up" with former Bukidnon congressman (and resigned Senator) Juan Miguel Zubiri (who is obviously very well-loved in Bukidnon) after the latter apologized to JV's dad, former President Erap Estrada. Migs Zubiri used to be a part of the "Spice Boys," a group of young congressmen who pushed for the articles of impeachment against Estrada in 2000. These days, Migs and JV are now both ...

A blog reader of mine, Francis Awiten, sent these photos he took of the Pulangui River or Pulangi River, the longest river in the Province of Bukidnon, Mindanao, Philippines. Bukidnon was also hit by Typhoon Sendong. Typhoon Sendong's international name is Tropical Storm Washi. The death toll from Typhoon Sendong has reportedly reached 180 with nearly 400 people missing because of flash floods. Most of the victims' bodies were covered in mud. As you can see from the photos of Pulangui River, the water level really rose. Pulangui River Bukidnon has a length of 320 kilometers and traverses through majority of the cities and municipalities of Bukidnon from its source in Barangay Kalabugao, Impasug-ong, Bukidnon.

New wage increase for Northern Mindanao to take effect July 24, 2011

Announcements, BIMP-EAGA, Bukidnon, Camiguin, Commentary, Government, Headline, Iligan City, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental, Misamis Oriental, News
I'm not really sure if this is good news at all. The National Wages and Productivity Commission has announced that effective July 24, 2011, minimum wage earners in Region X (Northern Mindanao) will get an increase in their daily rate in the amount of...*hold your breath*...*drum roll please*...a whopping (yes, I'm being sarcastic) Php 17.00. Yep, that's seventeen pesos additional per day. That amount is supposed to represent the so-called Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) under Wage RBX-16. I know what you guys are thinking. Some may think "at least there's an increase kesa sa wala na lang," or "that's not fair! Mindanaoans are very hardworking people and they deserve proper pay...definitely more than just seventeen pesos!" Sad to say, Php 17.00 is not even enough to buy one kilo of rice!...

A few days ago, something terrible happened. A deadly landslide occurred in Bukidnon. The Bukidnon landslide happened in Sitio Hangaron, Barangay Lumbayao, Valencia City, Bukidnon. Not only were there victims in Lumbayao, some people including kids were also affected in nearby Barangay Tongan-Tongan. The Bukidnon landslide was, needless to say, very devastating. As of press time, 6 bodies have been recovered in both Barangay Lumbayao and Barangay Tongan-Tongan. The victims from Lumbayao included Maritess Lagunay, Segundina Lagunay and Sheryl Sadsad. The victims from Tongan-Tongan were 7 year old Joy Collamar and 6 year old Roque Santilla. Sheryl Sadsad is the wife of a friend of my brother's. Actually, I also know Sheryl's husband but he was closer to my brother. The landslide hit Sh...

During the Open Budget Partnership forum I attended in Manila a few days ago, I saw an old friend. I didn't expect him to actually come since a member of the event secretariat told me earlier that day that he might not be able to drop by. Lo and behold, he came...and when I approached him to say hello, he looked a little bit surprised to see me there but nonetheless looked happy. The old friend I'm referring to is former Bukidnon First District Congressman Dr. JR Nereus "Neric" Acosta. Yes, he's the same Neric Acosta who ran for a Senate seat in May 2010. He's the same Neric Acosta who's a staunch advocate of environment protection, responsible population management, health and programs for climate change. And yes, he's the same Neric Acosta who authored the Clean Air Act and who's t...
