LikeAng politics nga naman! Mindanaoan was a bit shocked – nay, very, very shocked – when I found out that last-termer Bukidnon Gov. Jose Ma. Zubiri, Jr. and political archrival JR Nereus “Neric” Acosta MAY soon sing sweet music together. This, after Zubiri is reportedly eyeing a “transfer” to the Liberal Party from LAKAS-CMD-KAMPI. Acosta will run for Senator under the LP.
What’s so interesting about this is that these former political allies have burned a lot of bridges over the years and have become bitter political enemies. Zubiri has accused Acosta of graft and corruption. Acosta, on the other hand, tried to run for Bukidnon governor in the last elections but lost to Zubiri by a very large margin. From mudslinging to accusations of one trying to kill the other to one trying to discredit the other, you can say that the Zubiris and the Acostas have been, are and most probably will still be bitter enemies. To even see them in one place can probably be the biggest news for the day in Bukidnon. However, with Zubiri reportedly transferring allegiance to Noynoy and Mar, should we now call these two FRENEMIES?
Interestingly, Zubiri reportedly led a 3-day caucus in the Province of Bukidnon, Mindanao recently and during the mock polls, Liberal Party bets Noynoy Aquino and Mar Roxas gained the most votes among Bukidnon mayors, vice mayors, councilors and barangay captains. Because of the result, Zubiri now has reportedly urged the local leaders to pledge allegiance to Noynoy and Mar and ultimately to the LP.
As of press time, talks of an induction in Bukidnon are spreading like wildfire.
Interestingly, too, Zubiri has now accused President Gloria Arroyo’s party, LAKAS-CMD-KAMPI, of not being “supportive” of the provinces that have delivered votes for her in the last election. Zubiri said that PGMA’s party has neglected the provinces that have helped her win before. Of course, we can assume that Zubiri wanted to remind the president that he busted his ass campaigning for her in Bukidnon during the last elections and yet Bukidnon (or probably him) hasn’t been generously rewarded.
Another thing that we should also take note of — Zubiri’s son, Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri is an official of LAKAS-CMD. Does this mean that Migs will also soon leave PGMA’s side and follow his dad’s transfer to the LP?
Bukidnon, Mindanao no longer means just pineapples, cool climate and lush greenery. It’s now home to the longest zipline in Asia – Dahilayan Adventure Park’s Zipzone! How to get to ZIPZONE Extreme Zip Line Adventure – Manolo Fortich is about an hour’s drive away from Cagayan de Oro City, Mindanao. As soon as you reach Alae (one landmark would be the Alae footbath…all vehicles entering the Bukidnon province will need to stop at the footbath area), take note of a rotunda. You will see this before you reach the Alae bridge. Take this road. Go straight ahead until you reach Camp Philips (this is where most Del Monte employees live). Drive further until you reach Dahilayan.

It seems there’s no stopping priests from joining politics these days.
If Pampanga has a Fr. Eddie Panlilio, Bukidnon Mindanao has a Fr. Diosdado Tabios. Tabios, the former parish priest of Valencia City, Bukidnon, is set to run for governor in Bukidnon come May 2010. He’s set to face incumbent Bukidnon Vice Governor Alex Calingasan (LAKAS CMD KAMPI), who will run for the gubernatorial position, his relative Ernesto Tabios (Liberal Party) and Delfina Bicatulo (Alpha Omega 9K Party).
While re-electionist Pampanga Governor Ed Panlilio has reportedly filed a petition asking that he leave his priestly duties as he pursue his political plans, Tabios has yet to formally file a written petition. He has, however, spoken to Bishop Honesto Pacana of Malaybalay City, Bukidnon and the latter said that Tabios will be suspended from performing priestly duties.
In 2007, Tabios left for the Netherlands to pursue further studies. He was reportedly a scholar under the Ford Foundation. Upon his return to Bukidnon this year, he became an assistant to the administrator of the San Isidro Cathedral in Malaybalay City.
Nacionalista Party, through their spokesperson Gilbert Remulla, issued this statement about Tabios’ candidacy.
This matter is actually very, very interesting.
For one, Tabios is the first priest in the Diocese of Malaybalay to ever run for public office.
Secondly, he will be up against Calingasan, who’s heavily favored to win. Calingasan, who’s now on his third term as Bukidnon Vice Governor, enjoys incumbent Bukidnon Governor Jose Ma. Zubiri’s support and the political backing of LAKAS CMD KAMPI. In other words, whoever Zubiri “anoints” is highly considered the “shoo in.” With Tabios’ entry, however, does this mean that Bukidnon voters will finally say, “tama na, iba naman” through their votes?
Thirdly, (and I reckon the most controversial reason as to why Mindanaoans should find this whole Bukidnon thing interesting) Tabios also has “skeletons in the closet” to deal with, so to speak. Considered a controversial priest who garnered the ire of so many people during his term as Valencia parish priest (his name was involved in several money-related problems), Tabios also allegedly has several children.
