Mindanao is my native land. This is where I belong, feel secure and am at peace. To be in Mindanao is to feel the embrace of a warm, soft blanket.

Mindanaoan - Blogging the REAL Mindanao!

Mindanaoan is super excited to share this great piece of news with you all! As you know, I’m a very proud Dabawenya and I promote Davao City as much as I can and in any way possible.

One of the ways that I do this is to blog about my hometown Davao (but of course!). Fortunately, I’m not the only one who loves to write about the world’s most livable city. There are a lot of other Davaoenos who are as eager to share updates, news, photos and even the latest chismis about Davao as I am! :D

Presenting BlogDavao.com – the most comprehensive aggregator site of Davao-based blogs. Blog Davao features Davao’s blogging landscape at a glance!

What’s great about this site is that you can easily find so many Davao-based blogs and quickly access the entries that may catch your fancy.

BlogDavao.com is where you can find updates on blogs about Davao City. Hear it straight from people who come from Davao City, from people who breathe and love Davao!

As you can see, Mindanaoan is one of the very proud contributors of BlogDavao.com :)

For fellow Dabawenyos like me who also have blogs about Davao, please visit the site now and don’t hesitate to contact the admin. I’m pretty sure they’d be happy to include your blog there as well!

Go Davao! :D

So finally, Mindanaoan has met Ettore “Thor” Dulay!

Thor, a fellow Dabawenyo (and so of course is also a fellow Mindanaoan), is one of the country’s most talented vocalists. From starting out in a Davao City vocal group to recording an album with a hit single entitled “Wonderland” (this song held the number spot at Wave 89.1’s show “Soul Review” for 5 straight weeks) to recording a song for the 2003 Metro Manila Film Festival entry “Fantastic Man” to basically being one of the most sought after singers in Metro Manila today, Thor has definitely gone a long way.

So okay, here’s the lowdown — even before our unplanned, fateful meeting last December 22, 2009 (right in the middle of the OTG gig of RnB band K24/7), Thor and I have been in touch through online and SMS. I have heard of him way, way back through members of South Border (I’ll write about them here in Mindanaoan.com, too) and of course, when I learned that he, too, was from Davao City, I made a mental note to meet him someday and tell him how he’s made all of us Mindanaoans proud.

Fast forward a few years later, and as fate would place a nice twist to things, my very good and pretty friend Mai became his “special someone.” Mai and I met through South Border, too, as both of us are passionate fans of the band. So there — Thor and I finally had a mutual friend! :)

Even if Thor and Mai were based in Manila and I, at the time, was already back in Mindanao, we didn’t lose touch. When I needed Thor’s help during one of my World AIDS Day events, Mai helped him create Thor’s video greeting. I then used that video greeting and played that during my WAD event :) And then of course we also kept in touch through various social networking sites.

And finally, on December 22, 2009, after years of connecting only through the virtual world, I met my longtime “virtual” (now IRL) friend Thor :)

Ah, nothing beats meeting a friend for the very first time, yes?

Here’s a video clip of Thor singing “One Last Cry.” Took this one when he jammed alongside K24/7:

New fastfood outlets and restaurants may pop up like mushrooms in Davao City Mindanao but methinks Dabawenyos still love TAPS. Taps, short for “tapsilog” (tapa – sinangag – itlog), has long been in the food industry in Davao City and it’s known for its wide array of “pares” or “tapsi” meals. Name it – they most probably have it. From tapsilog to bangsilog (bangus-sinangag-itlog) to tocilog to lekasilog (lechon kawali-sinangag-itlog) to adosilog (adobo-sinangag-itlog), TAPS Davao has it!

If I’m not mistaken, they’ve been in existence for more than 15 years. Taps was one of the places my friends and I frequently hung out in during our high school days (only goes to show my age, eh?) These days, Taps now has branches in Bolton Street (the one I still frequently go to), Sta. Ana Street, Legaspi Street and at Matina Town Square.

So why do Mindanaoans especially Dabawenyos still love TAPS?

Firstly, because the prices are oh-so-affordable!

Just take this primasilog meal, for instance. Primasilog means pritong manok-sinangag-itlog!

For only P55.00, you get two pieces of medium-sized fried chicken, egg and fried rice. Not bad, right?

Thankfully, my fellow Dabawenyos and I can now finally say that our beloved Davao City REALLY is a world-class city to live in. I just learned that the world’s most livable city will soon have its very own sports dome — fully airconditioned, ready to accommodate roughly 8,000 people and worth roughly P100 million.

And here’s something that may surprise a lot of people — the City Government of Davao need not shell out a single cent since the funds for this project have been sourced elsewhere — i.e. the national government funds.

Interestingly, the funding for this Davao City sports dome will be taken from the congressional development fund of the Speaker of the House Prospero Nograles, a certified Dabawenyo.

Nograles said that the initial P100 million was taken from the national budget while an additional P40 million will be taken from his congressional funds.

With P140 million allocated for this project, expect a world class sports facility, according to Nograles.

Are Dabawenyos really happy about this project, though?

To be erected at the University of Southeastern Philippines (USEP) in Obrero, construction for the Davao City sports dome will begin in the next 6 months.

Yup, before the May 2010 elections…and yup, during the campaign season.

Nograles’ son, Atty. Karlo Nograles, is reportedly eyeing a national position — observers say that he may run for congress. His father is reportedly eyeing the mayoralty seat in Davao City.

I could only wish that this Davao City sports dome issue not be used during the campaign season…but then again we know this is wishful thinking.

The sports dome will reportedly have commercial spaces. These will be rented out to generate income. The income, according to Nograles, will be used to fund scholarship programs.

Anyways, politics aside, the Davao City sports dome is a welcome development. Finally, big shows can now be organized in Davao City. We may even be able to host a Philippine Basketball Association game! Right now, I think Panabo is the only nearest venue for PBA games in Mindanao.

Event organizers will be happy to know of this sports dome in Davao City. Question is…will locals be pleased?
