Mindanao is my native land. This is where I belong, feel secure and am at peace. To be in Mindanao is to feel the embrace of a warm, soft blanket.

Mindanaoan - Blogging the REAL Mindanao!

So finally, Mindanaoan has met Ettore “Thor” Dulay!

Thor, a fellow Dabawenyo (and so of course is also a fellow Mindanaoan), is one of the country’s most talented vocalists. From starting out in a Davao City vocal group to recording an album with a hit single entitled “Wonderland” (this song held the number spot at Wave 89.1’s show “Soul Review” for 5 straight weeks) to recording a song for the 2003 Metro Manila Film Festival entry “Fantastic Man” to basically being one of the most sought after singers in Metro Manila today, Thor has definitely gone a long way.

So okay, here’s the lowdown — even before our unplanned, fateful meeting last December 22, 2009 (right in the middle of the OTG gig of RnB band K24/7), Thor and I have been in touch through online and SMS. I have heard of him way, way back through members of South Border (I’ll write about them here in Mindanaoan.com, too) and of course, when I learned that he, too, was from Davao City, I made a mental note to meet him someday and tell him how he’s made all of us Mindanaoans proud.

Fast forward a few years later, and as fate would place a nice twist to things, my very good and pretty friend Mai became his “special someone.” Mai and I met through South Border, too, as both of us are passionate fans of the band. So there — Thor and I finally had a mutual friend! :)

Even if Thor and Mai were based in Manila and I, at the time, was already back in Mindanao, we didn’t lose touch. When I needed Thor’s help during one of my World AIDS Day events, Mai helped him create Thor’s video greeting. I then used that video greeting and played that during my WAD event :) And then of course we also kept in touch through various social networking sites.

And finally, on December 22, 2009, after years of connecting only through the virtual world, I met my longtime “virtual” (now IRL) friend Thor :)

Ah, nothing beats meeting a friend for the very first time, yes?

Here’s a video clip of Thor singing “One Last Cry.” Took this one when he jammed alongside K24/7:

So my Southrace boys and I were in Davao City over the weekend for their Philippine Councilors’ League gig. Since I’m a certified Dabawenya (born and raised in Davao City!) and the members of Southrace band are from Initao Misamis Oriental (Nilo, the rhythm guitarist and back-up vocalist), Iligan City (Jovy, the lead vocalist and lead guitarist), Cagayan de Oro City (Ches, the drummer) and Manolo Fortich Bukidnon (Glenn, the bassist), I was the self-appointed “tour guide” of sorts during our two-day stay in the largest city in the world.

Now what I’m about to share is NOT to lambast anyone. Instead, I’m hoping that somehow this could serve as a wake-up call not only for the City Tourism Office of Davao City but also for the hundreds of taxi drivers in Davao City as well.

You see, on our first night in Davao, our group, composed of five people, caught two taxis from Matina Town Square (MTS). Ches and I rode in one taxi while the other three rode in the other one. I won’t name the taxi company anymore. Suffice it to say that it may take me a while before I flag down one of their units the next time I’m in town.

Anyways, from MTS, we were supposed to go back to our hotel, which was located along Magallanes Street. Our taxi fare was P42.50. When Ches and I alighted from the cab, we sort of wondered why the other taxi hasn’t arrived yet (the other taxi trailed us when we left MTS) We then just went straight to our hotel rooms, thinking that the other three band members could arrive in just a few minutes anyway. Lo and behold, after about 10 minutes, Jovy sent me a message and asked for the street where the hotel was. I told him Magallanes Street and asked why. He said that they GOT LOST. Confused, I immediately called him and asked where they already were. He said that they were on a bridge somewhere and that the driver claimed that he lost track of OUR taxi. So I said we were already at the hotel and gave Jovy instructions for him to relay to the driver. Within minutes, their group arrived. I was told that the taxi fare already reached P102.50! Fortunately, Nilo was quick on his toes and refused to pay. The taxi driver then just conceded and somehow acknowledged that it was his fault and only asked for P40.00

While I somehow laud the taxi driver for his honesty and for the fact that he did acknowledge his fault (he apparently pretended that he knew where the hotel was but when he lost sight of the taxi Ches and I rode in, he sorta panicked), I also feel that cab drivers should be more honest these days. If you don’t know where this or that is, then don’t pretend that you do. I hate to think that the driver thought he could just circle the three boys around and perhaps receive more money that way (maybe he somehow knew that his passengers weren’t from Davao anyway). Unfortunately for him, his passengers knew whom to contact (in this case, me!) just in case something irregular happened.

Speaking of too much honesty from a taxi driver…my next rant is about a Davao City taxi driver who’s TOO HONEST. My boys and I were at the Gaisano Mall of Davao and we flagged down a cab (again, I won’t mention the name of the taxi company) I told the driver that we wanted to go to People’s Park. Now, correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t People’s Park already a well-known tourist spot in Davao City? I mean, it’s right smack in the middle of the city, it’s supposed to be controversial (with all the hullabaloo surrounding its development), it’s where hundreds of families go to for outings or to spend their Sunday afternoons at.

I mean, if you’re a Davao City taxi driver, shouldn’t you at least KNOW where People’s Park is?!

Because apparently the driver of the taxi we rode in DID NOT KNOW where People’s Park was. The first time he told my group that he didn’t know where People’s Park was, I thought he was joking…apparently he wasn’t. So I explained that the People’s Park that I was referring to was the area beside Apo View Hotel, right in front of Casa Leticia, it’s right along Camus Street and it’s near Penong’s (how’s that for a site location? LOL) Anyways, even if I already gave those details, he still claimed that he didn’t know where it was.

So again, I had to give instructions. I had to guide the taxi driver. Can you imagine that?!

I mean, really…why drive a taxi if you don’t know where the major tourist spots are? Why place yourself in a situation where you’re expected to KNOW something but you know squat about?

The experience was really disappointing. Can you just imagine if a tourist rode those taxis? What will those tourists say about Davao City? What will those tourists say about the taxi drivers?

Taxi drivers, truth be told, play a major part in an area’s tourism efforts.

If they’re not well-informed or well-equipped with (at least) basic knowledge about their city, their city’s tourist spots, their city’s leaders (at least the most important or major ones) and even their city’s urban tales or interesting stories, this can somehow affect the city’s tourism efforts. More often than not, taxi drivers can be a tourist’s best friend or constant companion, so to speak. They can serve as “frontliners” and somehow “represent” the city and its people.

Let’s just hope that my experience will serve as a lesson, in one way or another.

priscilla mae navidadI was pleasantly surprised to see our “Baby South” during the press presentation of the official candidates of this year’s Binibining Pilipinas 2009 pageant. “Baby South” refers to Priscilla Mae Navidad, a 17 year old Dabawenya. I met Mae a few years ago in Davao City, Mindanao. I was helping organize the Davao leg of the nationwide “Rainbow Tour” of premiere Filipino band South Border and after the concert, I was also selling copies of their award-winning platinum CD, “Episode III” (yes, I know, major plugging na ‘to LOL :D ) Anyways, there was this tall girl who kept on asking me if she could meet Jay Durias (South Border’s musical director and keyboardist) because, according to her, they were cousins.

I must admit, I had reservations at first because after all, there was virtually A MOB of fans there at that time and there was no way for me to tell if her claim was true or not. However, there was just something real and innocent and sincere about her and so I allowed her to enter the backstage. To make the long story short, Jay was even thankful because I let Mae in. It was pala a reunion that he has been waiting for. Now was that cool or what?

Anyways, after that fateful “meeting,” Mae and I have kept in touch. Whenever South Border has a concert in Davao, we always meet before the show, chit chat as if there’s no tomorrow and together welcome our favorite band with shrieks and shrills. The last time we saw each other was during Jay’s solo concert at The Venue (Mae already won the Miss Teen Philippines pageant at that time). A few months later, she entered the Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition reality show (ABS-CBN Channel 2). She was tagged as the “Deaf Dreamer from Davao.”  After her PBB stint, we got in touch through text and even planned a get-together. Unfortunately things just got so busy – we were both busy traveling – she for her PBB related concerts and I for my business and work. And now, I learned that she entered the Binibining Pilipinas 2009 pageant! Wow, I feel so old LOL Ah, our baby Mae is really all grown up!

Anyways, I wish her good luck. Let’s hope another Mindanaoan beauty captures the crown this year!

Original album review written last August 31, 2007. The author of this piece (who is also the one behind Mindanaoan.com) is a long-time supporter of award winning Filipino band South Border. Jay Durias, a certified Dabawenyo, is South Border’s musical director and keyboardist. Jay’s solo album, “Songs I Grew Up With,” is a project album.

Admit it – you’ve always wondered how South Border keyboardist and musical director Jay Oliver Durias would fare as a solo artist. After all, he’s largely considered as “the main man” behind the highly successful band, having composed and arranged most of South Border’s hits including “Rainbow,” “Love Of My Life” and the favorite of many, “Kahit Kailan,” and having sung the well-loved ballad “Habang Atin Ang Gabi.” The silent musical genius behind a lot of hits including “Ikaw Nga” (OST – Mulawin, GMA 7) and “Di Na Nag-iisa” (OST – Darna, GMA 7), you can’t help but think – when will someone like Durias, who has the soulful voice, the boyish charm and the unquestionable talent ever try to do something on his own, away from the image of South Border and just as himself? Because, really, South Border may have had front liners but fans and music critics alike have always recognized and appreciated him and his work. Come to think of it – while it’s difficult to imagine South Border without Jay Durias, it’s not difficult to imagine a Jay Durias without South Border – the man has what it takes to produce phenomenal hits – there’s just not been a chance for him to fully showcase his gift.

Fortunately, that chance is here…NOW.

Durias is finally giving the music world a touch uniquely his own via a solo album dubbed “Songs I Grew Up With” (produced under new label Open Mic Records, distributed by Star Records). And, no, this project should not be misconstrued. The solo project has the full blessings of his band mates and is in no way an indication that he’s leaving the band.

A collection of carefully chosen ditties which have, in one way or another, made quite an impact in Durias’ young life, “Songs I Grew Up With” contains 10 tracks – “Do That To Me One More Time,” “ Light and Shade,” “Him,” “Reward,” “Birthday Song,” “You Can Do Magic,” “My Cherrie Amour,” “Goodnight Girl,” “Sa Hangin” and the carrier single, “I’ll Have To Say I Love You In A Song.”

Before you dismiss the album as just another bunch of chopped covers, one must realize that these songs represent memories. Hence, unlike other albums that either try to match the original artists’ high notes or try to focus on the songs’ commercial appeal, the songs in this album are stamped with candor, warmth and individuality. Because Durias sings them honestly and from the heart, the songs become – different. Every song has new details and Durias’ genuine artistry reflects on each.

“Songs I Grew Up With” boasts of a lot of attitude, beautifully re-arranged tunes and solid, powerful vocal varieties. The album can be considered a journey of sorts. From the days when Durias was still feeling his way in the world to the days of pure gratitude, the listener is transported to the happy, sad, upbeat and thankful days of one of Davao City’s pride and joy.

While the entire album generally has a magical feel to it, one should not discount the fact that each and every song has a distinct touch.

The carrier single, “I’ll Have To Say I Love You…,” for instance, is one of the pleasant surprises in the album. Trained and untrained ears alike may probably never know what’s coming, judging by the first few notes of the song. Then, a few seconds later, it becomes a light bulb moment – you can’t but mutter to yourself, “how’d he do that? Now that’s good music.” The carrier single is peppered with spice and everything nice – it embodies an album that you know will underscore Durias’ silent but laudable gift.

“Do That To Me…” is another pleasant surprise in the album. A few seconds into the melody and one will eventually realize that the ditty has evolved into something rich and playful. The beautiful thing about this is that it hasn’t totally veered away from its classic feel that’s reminiscent of sweet love.

“My Cherrie Amour” has a nice twist, too. It has become sexier…more provocative…but with a whiff of tenderness. Listeners will love the easy-on-the-ear vocals and the different take on the melody – it’s as “lovely as a summer’s day!”

Another noteworthy track is “You Can Do Magic,” which can most likely be an easy favorite of many. Durias laced the song with amazing, danceable flavor – almost salsa-like. Who would ever think that the inclusion of doo doo doo’s could make this ditty more interesting? One cannot help but wonder how Durias ever thought of re-interpreting that best-loved standard and even making it into a distinct star of a song on its own.

Let it be emphasized, however, that “Songs I Grew Up With” is not just a showcase of Durias’ arranging skills – although for sure industry experts will agree that the album can and has now set the rules, if not raise the bar, in terms of musical arrangements. Vocals-wise, the album can be considered a treasure trove of sorts.

“Light and Shade” and “Him” highlight Durias’ poignant, intriguing and beautiful voice that can only be compared to artists such as John Legend and Brian McKnight. “Birthday Song” is sexy, sweet and interesting. “Reward,” which is incidentally a praise song, features his heart-wrenching rendition of a love and of a longing. It can easily be a favorite of a lonely soul, who wants to reiterate the promise of redemption and faith. Durias’ vocal prowess is also showcased via the emotional rendition of “Goodnight Girl.” If one listens to it deep into the night, it should not be a surprise if tears come soon. The only original and Filipino song in the album, “Sa Hangin,” is a certified blockbuster hit in the making. It has already gained quite a following, after its initial airplay in several radio stations. “Sa Hangin” is a fitting finale of an album that is sure to not only bring listeners down to memory lane or to a sentimental journey but also to let them take a peek inside Durias’ colorful life.

“Songs I Grew Up With,” with all its artful arrangement, smooth vocal power and meticulous choice of significant tracks, has all the ingredients of hard work, talent, ingenuity and yes, commercial success. The quality of the production is obviously high and loyal fans will have their glorious fill of Durias’ great musicianship. Seasoned musicians and people who have yet to succumb to Durias’ spell will enjoy listening to this album. It’s a tranquil, introspective ride anybody would be happy to take.

Lastly, listeners will cherish this album as it reflects a new creative direction for one of today’s most admired musical geniuses. “Songs I Grew Up With” is a celebration…a reminder that once in a while, someone like Durias comes along, shakes things up in a good way and lets us realize that yes, good music is still very much possible.

Get yourself a copy of “Songs I Grew Up With.” It’s money well spent. It’s a toast you can’t help but raise a glass to. (Maria Irene S.A.)
