Mindanao is my native land. This is where I belong, feel secure and am at peace. To be in Mindanao is to feel the embrace of a warm, soft blanket.

Mindanaoan - Blogging the REAL Mindanao!

Here are some photos taken during the Regine…Most Requested concert of Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez in Cagayan de Oro City, Mindanao last December 4, 2009. These photos were taken by my very talented brother Bon, a professional photographer, illustrator, graphic artist and layout artist.

For more samples of my brother Bon’s work, please check out his official website. Hire him if you need a wedding photographer — he’s simply amazing! Plus he often gets me as his back-up or 2nd photographer so there’s a chance that we’ll meet, too! :D Don’t forget to let me know that you read my blog post about him, okay? :)

Regine Velasquez’s concert was held at The Atrium, Limketkai Center, CDO. Musical director of the show was Raul Mitra (Regine’s brother in law). Special guests were Jed Madela and Eva Castillo.

Please do not forget to give credit to my brother Bon (please don’t forget to include a direct link to his official website — http://www.BonAserios.com) should you use these photos in any form.

In the meantime, if you need a photographer (wedding, debut, baptismal, portraiture etc) or an event organizer in Mindanao, please feel free to CONTACT ME. You can also call (+63) 919 238 6575.

The Philippine counterpart of “Britain’s Got Talent” is the newest talent show set to premiere via ABS CBN Channel 2. Dubbed “Pilipinas Got Talent,” this show aims to showcase various Filipino acts.

Pilipinas-Got-Talent

And yes, there is good news for Mindanaoans!

For those of you who want to join this nationwide search for the most talented Pinoy acts, then read on…

Pilipinas Got Talent will hold auditions in Mindanao! In Davao City, auditions for Pilipinas Got Talent will be held on November 30, December 1 and December 2. In Cagayan de Oro City, meanwhile, auditions will be held on November 25, 26 and 27.

Actually, phone calls or inquiries are now accommodated. If you think you have talent or if you have an interesting act that you can showcase before the entire Philippines (and the rest of the world, thanks to TFC or The Filipino Channel), then try your luck!

If you’re in the Cagayan de Oro or Northern Mindanao area, call (088) 309 2070 or (088) 309 2075. Who knows…you might just be the next star! (thankies to Magman for the info!)

My 3 younger brothers and I all loved to draw, paint and sketch. However, our father taught us how to further hone our skills. My father was a very talented illustrator. I used “was” because he died several years ago, back when I was still in college. He was an amazing artist – with just a charcoal pencil and a blank sheet of paper, he could whip up a very detail-oriented drawing of a hen taking care of its chicks in just a few minutes. He could sketch a portrait oh so effortlessly. He didn’t like to trace and he seldom used an eraser.

He drew from the heart.

Fast forward many years – our youngest sibling Bon seems to be the only one who continues to dabble in the arts. My love for painting, drawing and sketching is still there — I’m just one of those who need a major bout of inspiration and a certain mood before I pick up my brush, though. I do apply that love for graphic design in other aspects of my job, though — in making posters for events I organize, in editing my photos and in creating various crafts.

Anyways – back to my brother Bon – apart from now being a professional photographer, he continues to do graphic design, caricatures and illustrations for various clients here and abroad. In fact, he used to be the regular cartoonist of the “Ming the Mini Bus” comic series. Those comic books were circulated all over Hongkong and the New Territories (I should know, I personally called up the client who hired my brother while I was in Hongkong last year – I’m THAT proud of an ate! :) ). My brother also drew for the Xavier University Crusader School Publication’s “Hohongihong” (the back part of the magazine which is full of cartoons).

These days, he has added another feather on his cap. Bon, along with three other artists, showcased their talents in doodling in a recent exhibition held at Spruce, Limketkai Mall, Cagayan de Oro City, Mindanao.

Spruce, by the way, is a boutique located at the second floor of the largest mall in Cagayan de Oro. It carries various brands such as Havaianas, Birkenstock, Charcoal and Aranaz.

A doodle, on the other hand, is a type of sketch, an unfocused drawing made while a person’s attention is otherwise occupied.

Check out one of the two finished products (this one’s currently on display at Spruce):

And here’s my brother Bon, hard at work:

Truth be told, he looks so much like our father from this angle :)

I’m happy that my father’s legacy still lives on…through Bon :) And I’m glad that local establishments such as Spruce continue to support Mindanaoan artists. To the Spruce management – may your tribe increase!

By the way, the works of Bon and a fellow professional photographer, Dustein, will be featured in a photo exhibit at Spruce this month of September. Watch out for that! Of course, Mindanaoan will also post updates.

Do drop by Spruce at the second floor of Lim Ket Kai Mall soon.

Also, if you’re interested to hire my brother, please don’t hesitate to CONTACT ME through this form or by calling (+63) 919 238 6575. He can accept commission work for doodles, caricatures, illustrations and graphic design. Of course, you can also hire him as wedding photographer (whenever he’s the main photographer, he often gets me as back-up hehe :) So it’d be cool if you hire a brother-sister tandem, yes? I’d love to meet you, too!)

thankyougirls_posterI’m really pleased to know that the songs at least three Mindanawon bands were included in the soundtrack of the independent Visayan filmThe ‘Thank You’ Girls.”

The bands I’m referring to are Gasulina (a band I had the chance to hire for a gig roughly two years ago…I already fell madly in love with their songs “The Pill” and “Fueled” then — the very same songs that are included in the indie film), The Superflirts and fellow Atenistas, Lizardchips.

I still haven’t had the chance to view “The ‘Thank You’ Girls” movie (if I’m not mistaken, their last screening was at Robinson’s Indiesine in Manila last January 2009) but I’m really looking forward to getting my hands on a DVD (original copy, don’t worry! ;) ) Hopefully, though, there will be more screenings of this movie because I”m sure a lot of fellow Mindanaoans would wanna watch!

According to the film’s synopsis, “The ‘Thank You’ Girls” is a Visayan film with a gay lingo twist. It’s a movie about gay beauty pageant veterans from Davao City who travel to Cagayan de Oro City in order to conquer the grandest competition of beauty, personality and brains in the whole province. These gay veterans accordingly believe that being city dwellers, gays in the province will never stand a chance against them.

Pretty interesting plot, I must say. I reckon there will be lots of funny as well as dramatic moments in the film.

To the Mindanao-based bands whose songs got included in the movie soundtrack – congratulations! Hopefully, more film producers get Mindanaoan bands and/or artists. That will really help spread the music of the south!
