So I was in Davao City a few days ago to accompany one of my mom’s classes. It was a quick, day-long tour and included in our agenda were Davao Crocodile Park (I’ll blog about this next), Ateneo de Davao University college campus and of course…a visit to my favorite durian candy store in my hometown – Lola Abon’s.

My brothers and I grew up knowing that if you want durian candy, eat Lola Abon’s products. Nothing else. Don’t settle for those sold in bus terminals or in grocery stores. Lola Abon’s made the best durian candy products. That’s it.
Lola Abon died years ago but my brothers and I met her. This was way back when her “store” was basically her home garage and her workers were hidden behind a curtain just a few steps away. Whenever we visit her store and buy her candies, we were always given extra pieces. Lola was a very amiable lady.
So whenever we had guests or if my cousins’ classes had to tour Davao and wanted to buy “pasalubong,” we always, ALWAYS brought them to Lola Abon’s. There were times when some would just settle for those sold in terminals but they end up asking their classmates for pieces of Lola Abon’s products. It was simply good and worth the money.

Fortunately, it looks like my mom’s students agree with me
Lola Abon’s is located at 23 San Miguel Village, Matina, Davao City (right across the GSIS office, take two blocks…you won’t miss it since the store is already well-known at that area).
I suggest that apart from durian candies, you also purchase mangosteen products. Very, very tasty!
DAVAO CITY, MINDANAO – Whenever my family and I are back home in Davao City and we happen to visit Gaisano Mall of Davao along Bajada, we often find ourselves having our snack at the cheesecake etc. branch there. Located at the second floor of the said Davao City mall, cheesecake etc. serves pasta, coffee, cakes and other pastries.
My brother likes their blueberry cheesecake while I often have the chocolate moist muffins. Yum!
Top that with a tall glass of their homebrewed iced tea and we’re happy Davao foodies!

What about you? What’s your favorite hangout in Davao City and what do you usually order?
One of the restaurants I tend to go to whenever I’m in the City of Golden Friendship here in Mindanao (Cagayan de Oro City, of course) is Bigby’s Cafe and Restaurant. Ever since they opened in Cagayan de Oro nearly ten years ago on December 8, 1998, people have raved about their appetizing food choices and of course, the size of their servings. True to its name, Bigby’s offers meals in BIG sizes and they make sure that you leave their cafe and restaurant full and contented. Actually, you may even end up bringing some of your food home because that’s how large their servings are.
So anyways I was in CDO last weekend with my mom and we decided to eat dinner at Bigby’s SM Cagayan de Oro. My mom ordered the Boomerang Shrimps meal (P219.00) and soda while I ordered the Bigby’s Pork Steak (P219.00) and raspberry iced tea (P85.00) *Photos were taken using a Motorola Krzr.
As you can see, the serving is HUGE yet the meal is, IMO, affordable.
The meat was tender and lean and was served on a sizzling plate. What I liked was that the meat was juicy and delish. The cup of rice, by the way, is already part of the P219.00 meal.
My mom was craving for dessert so she walked towards the display counter and looked at the array of cakes and pastries. When she got back to our table, she told me that she ordered the Bigby’s Cheese Caramel Cake. I haven’t tried that yet so I really didn’t know what to expect. Lo and behold, this was served to us:
The slice was so large it almost filled the entire plate!
My mom was a bit surprised, too. I told her that in Bigby’s, they don’t serve cheesecake. They serve CCCHHHEEESSSEEEE CCAAAAKKKKEEEE
One serving of this caramel cheesecake is priced at P250.00. That may be a bit expensive for many but I tell you, this slice is good for 4-5 people. There’s no way only two people can finish this off! The cake tastes rich and you would really know that they didn’t scrimp on the ingredients. Pretty delish.
And yep, you guessed it right. We brought a large portion of it home.

I, Mindanaoan, was finally able to “introduce” my mom to the renowned Roadhouse Cafe baby back ribs. I say renowned because a lot of foodies and food experts have already given their thumbs up on the baby back ribs served at Roadhouse Cafe.
Roadhouse Cafe serves Asian and Western cuisine. Its first and original branch can be found along Sayre Highway (national highway), Valencia City, Bukidnon, Mindanao. It now has a second branch at SM City Cagayan de Oro. Cagayan de Oro is roughly 2 and a half hours away from Valencia City.
Reasonably priced, Roadhouse Cafe’s baby back ribs tastes a bit sweet and tangy. The meat is very tender and definitely what you can call “fall off the bone”! As you can see from these photos, you’re given extra sauce and a few slices of cucumber. The rice is served separately.
I also ordered the pumpkin soup, which was also tasty and not too thick…just perfect to kickstart your appetite. As you can see, the pumpkin soup doesn’t have that “orange-y” hue. Not that the color makes any difference. Roadhouse Cafe pumpkin soup still tastes amazing, no matter what color it is!
My mom’s verdict? Thumbs up! She enjoyed the meal as much as I did. So the next time you’re in Cagayan de Oro, I suggest that you drop by Roadhouse Cafe. Or if you’re in Bukidnon, check out their original branch as well. It has a very homey feel
And while you’re there, try their fried bread and fried noodles!
