The Ateneo de Zamboanga University Concert Band will mark its 77th anniversary with a ground-breaking tour of Mindanao.

sir poly“This concert tour is in celebration of the Sesquicentennial (150 years) of the return of the Jesuits to the Philippines,” said band director Apolonio “Poli” G. Enriquez. “This is also in celebration of 100 years of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University from 1912-2012.”

The band concert dubbed “Stint” will play at Xavier University on November 24th, (Tuesday) with a 3.00 PM Matinee and 7.00 PM Gala performance.

This will be followed by a similar performance at the Rodelsa Hall of the Liceo de Cagayan University on the 25th, Wednesday, 7.30 PM. Tickets are available from P 30 to P 150 at XU and at P 100 (for students) and P 200 (for non-students) at Liceo.

Fr. Tony Moreno, S.J., AdZU president, said he got the inspiration for the concert tour following the band’s superb performance at the Brebeuf gym during the latest Fiesta Pilar weekend. Moreno, a Cagay-anon who traces his roots to Balingasag, Misamis Oriental studied at Xavier University High School and Ateneo de Manila University.

“During the concert, I texted the Presidents of Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan (XU) and Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU) and both are thrilled at the thought of having a concert in CdO and Davao,” Fr. Tony recalls. “Many people tell me our band is the pride and joy of AdZU, but it saddens me if we can’t share their talent with our sister universities. The farthest they’ve been to is Basilan! I’ve long wanted to expose them as far as CdO and Davao. Our aim is to expose our band to other places, and get them to raise some funds for their aging instruments.”

Founded in 1932, the band was reorganized in 1952 with Prof. Arcadio Perez as band Director. It aims to develop the musical talents of the Atenean to help build a well-rounded person as well as help him get a Jesuit-inspired education through his musical talent.

The band had its latest transformation into a concert band from its previous reincarnation as a pep and marching band when Enriquez assumed his present assignment in 1991.

A member of the band during his high school and college days at the Ateneo, Enriquez studied conducting under Prof. Alfredo Santos Buenaventura at the Centro Escolar University Conservatory of Music and is also a choir director, arranger, conductor and brass teacher.

Band members undergo a two-year beginners’ course training that requires them to finish the elementary and intermediate method books. They are the elevated into the regular band and are entitled to 50% scholarship (tuition only). After going through the first and second advanced books, they qualify for a full scholarship. Beginners mostly come from the grades 4 and 5 levels.

At present, the band has fifty (50) members, twenty four (24) of whom are college students, twenty (20) are from the high school and six (6) from the grade school.

Allow Mindanaoan to be oh-so-giddy! I’m just sooo excited with this piece of news that I got a hold of yesterday via Davao Base. I learned that there will be an Ateneo de Davao University and Ateneo de Manila University Glee Club joint concert on November! AAAHHH!!!

magis concert

The First Magis: The All-Ateneo Glee Club Concerto will be held on November 28, 2009, 7PM at the Finster Auditorium, 7th Floor of the Finster Building, Ateneo de Davao University, Davao City, Mindanao! The Ateneo de Manila College Glee Club and the Carillon, the official Ateneo de Davao University Glee Club, will perform.

And why is this such a big deal for me, you may ask?

Well, ahem, ahem…Mindanaoan was once a part of the Carillon :D I was one of the sopranos, thank you very much! Tee hee :D

Modesty aside, I’ve always been a part of my school’s glee clubs. Always soprano. Always joined as many glee club events as possible. And I loved singing to death.

Back in college, during my Carillon days, we were under the tutelage of Fr. Marasigan. I always have fond memories of him and of his teaching style. He wasn’t exactly the strict strict conductor…he was more like a friend. He even allowed us to have chocolate once in a while! (chocolate for singers is a no-no) He would sneak outside the Jesuit House and bring a lot of candies and chocolate bars for all of us. Sometimes he also asked us to join him for a cup of salabat.

During my Carillon days, we would practice at the old ADDU auditorium in front of the existing covered court, right beside the now defunct dormitory. We would all sing our “hee hee ha ha ha ha ha haaaa” and our “Where are you going today?” voice warm-up lessons. We would then sing the standard “Lupang Hinirang” for final warm-up before we practice our entire repertoire. It would mean that the dormers can’t sleep up until 9 pm but I’m sure they didn’t mind ;)

Our batch, if I’m not mistaken, was the very first one that held a joint concert with the Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan Glee Club in Cagayan de Oro City. That show was a huge success and I could still remember the packed Little Theater, where we performed for two nights.

I simply have sooo many kuwentos pa about my Carillon days and about my love affair with music. Ah, how is it that I have stopped singing? I should probably do that again…sing!

In the meantime, I look forward to watching this joint ADMU-ADDU Glee Club concert entitled the 1st Magis. Please come and watch, too!

thankyougirls_posterI’m really pleased to know that the songs at least three Mindanawon bands were included in the soundtrack of the independent Visayan filmThe ‘Thank You’ Girls.”

The bands I’m referring to are Gasulina (a band I had the chance to hire for a gig roughly two years ago…I already fell madly in love with their songs “The Pill” and “Fueled” then — the very same songs that are included in the indie film), The Superflirts and fellow Atenistas, Lizardchips.

I still haven’t had the chance to view “The ‘Thank You’ Girls” movie (if I’m not mistaken, their last screening was at Robinson’s Indiesine in Manila last January 2009) but I’m really looking forward to getting my hands on a DVD (original copy, don’t worry! ;) ) Hopefully, though, there will be more screenings of this movie because I”m sure a lot of fellow Mindanaoans would wanna watch!

According to the film’s synopsis, “The ‘Thank You’ Girls” is a Visayan film with a gay lingo twist. It’s a movie about gay beauty pageant veterans from Davao City who travel to Cagayan de Oro City in order to conquer the grandest competition of beauty, personality and brains in the whole province. These gay veterans accordingly believe that being city dwellers, gays in the province will never stand a chance against them.

Pretty interesting plot, I must say. I reckon there will be lots of funny as well as dramatic moments in the film.

To the Mindanao-based bands whose songs got included in the movie soundtrack – congratulations! Hopefully, more film producers get Mindanaoan bands and/or artists. That will really help spread the music of the south!
