Tangub City did it again! The Tribu Sinanduloy, entry of Tangub City, Misamis Occidental, Mindanao to the Sinulog 2010 streetdancing competition this year, bagged the top plum anew. Tribu Sinanduloy is the defending champion for the Sinulog-based category. And to add another feather to their cap, Tribu Sinanduloy also bagged the street dancing award!
Tangub City has bagged nine championship trophies since they first joined the Cebu festival in 1994. Their Sinulog 2010 victory is their ninth.
The dancers from Tangub City, Mindanao highlighted bountiful harvest blessed by Sto. Nino, the patron saint of Cebu City. Tribu Sinanduloy of Tangub brought with them large scarecrows, a carabao, neon green bamboo and other bright, attractive props.
The huge crowd at the Cebu City Sports Center was so impressed with their performance that many people at the bleachers gave them a standing ovation. Those at the VIP section also stood up and waved at the dancers after their rousing performance.
Tangub City officials led by mayor Jennifer Tan received the P1 Million cash prize – P500,000 for winning the Sinulog-based category and another P500,000 for the street dancing competition.
Tan, along with the Tribu Sinanduloy choreographer and other city officials, accepted the prizes Monday during the awarding ceremonies held at Cebu City Sports Center (Abellana).
Reports here in Cebu City say that at least 8 million people joined the Sinulog@30 2010 festivities. Authorities say that 3.5 million watched the Sinulog grand parade Sunday.

Dr. Orlando Fajardo, the vice president of Basilan State College in Basilan, Mindanao, was released a few hours before Christmas at an area between the towns of Tuburan and Tipo-Tipo.
Fajardo was captured two weeks ago at the BSC canteen.
The Fajardo family reportedly paid P100,000.00 for the “board and lodging” of their relative.
The money was also reportedly paid in installment.
Basilan Vice Governor Al Rasheed Sakalahul said Fajardo was released at around 9:30 p.m. Christmas eve Thursday.
Initially, the kidnappers wanted P20 million in ransom.
Then, the amount was lowered to P3.5 million.
Eventually, no ransom was paid. Only the so-called “board and lodging” fee was paid.
The kidnappers initially demanded P20 million in ransom but lowered it to P3.5 million.

The Union of Peoples’ Lawyers in Mindanao (UPLM) condemns in the strongest possible terms the brutal murder of scores of civilians in Datu Abdullah Sangki town in Maguindanaoin, a bloody start for the 2010 elections. Among the hapless victims were UPLM treasurer Concepcion “Connie” Brizuela and UPLM member Cynthia Oquendo.
Authorities claimed the victims were reportedly abducted by some 100 armed. They were accompanying the wife of Buluan Vice Mayor Ishmael “Toto” Mangudadatu , Genalyn, whose group was on their way to file her husband’s certificate of candidacy for Maguindanao governor at the Commission on Elections office in Shariff Aguak town, Maguindanao.
This barbaric mass murder not only indicates the early onset of pre-election violence, but, also shows that the culture of impunity clearly pervades with the existence of warlord-maintained private armies that have long been tolerated by the government, past and present. Considering their proximity to the present occupants of Malacañang, these warlords, as well as their henchmen, certainly believe that they can get away with cold-blooded mass murder.
It is doubly condemnable that among the latest victims were journalists and lawyers, who have been in the line of fire because of their commitment to their respective profession. Sadly, the names of Atty. Brizuela and Atty. Oquendo will be added to the long list of victims of extra-judicial killings under the present administration.
The UPLM demands that justice be served on the victims, particularly to our colleagues, Attys. Brizuela and Oquendo. We demand that the Arroyo administration throws the full force of the government to bring the perpetrators, regardless of their affiliations, to the bar of justice.

Here’s another reason for all of us Mindanaoans to rejoice and certainly be proud of our fellow Mindanao residents! A school in Mindanao is gunning to be a part of the renowned Guinness Book of World Records! Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) in Iligan City, Mindanao will attempt the “Most Number of People Singing the National Anthem Simultaneously” on September 1, 2009.
The event, which will start at 9AM, will be held at the MSU-IIT Gymnasium and organizers are urging interested participants to wear white shirts and maong pants. Organizers of this Guinness World Records attempt are hoping to gather at least 3,000 people.
The event, the first ever attempt by a Mindanao school, will also be held in line with the celebration of the month of peace (September). Designed also to build unity, peace and harmony among the people in Mindanao, the event is sponsored by various stakeholders in Iligan City.
Let’s hope that MSU-IIT Iligan City garners all the support and that they become successful in their quest. Good luck!
President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is set to be in the Province of Bukidnon today, July 21, 2009. This trip, reportedly her 7th in Mindanao so far this year, could be, in my opinion, quite a controversial one. First of all, she’s supposed to hold a cabinet meeting in Malaybalay City, the capital of Bukidnon. Why Bukidnon of all places, you ask? Exactly.
Bukidnon is the “political home” of the Zubiris. Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri served as congressman in the third district for 9 years. Incumbent Bukidnon governor Jose Ma. Zubiri, Jr. is on his last term. Bukidnon 3rd District Congressman Joey Zubiri is Migs’ brother and eldest son of the governor. Malaybalay City Vice Mayor Ignacio “Inaki” Zubiri, nephew of the governor and cousin of the senator, is said to be eyeing the mayoralty post in next year’s elections after incumbent Mayor Florencio Flores, Jr. steps down. Flores is on his last term as the city’s chief executive.
Bukidnon is also home to several controversies including the fact that the governor, who’s said to still be under the LAKAS CMD party, has endorsed different personalities as his next presidential bet. In 2008, he endorsed former Senate President Manny Villar. A few months later, he signified support for Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro. Then during the Kaamulan Festival 2009 celebration, he called Senator Loren Legarda as “Madame President.” And then just a few weeks ago, during Teodoro’s “carnival-themed” birthday party, Zubiri declared support for Gibo. Yes, it’s THAT confusing so I cannot blame you if you’d blurt out, “ano ba talaga kuya?!” You could just imagine the confusion of Zubiri’s allies in the province as well. If your leader changes his mind as often as he changes his clothes, what will you think, right?
And so there have been talks that many of Zubiri’s political allies in the province are slowly “leaving” his fold. Observers say that not a few mayors, councilors and provincial board members are already keeping their distance.
Is this why the cabinet meeting has to be held in Bukidnon? For the Zubiris to show everyone that they’re still near and dear to the President’s heart?
I can’t help but wonder how PGMA will treat the governor. Will she smile at him? Hug him? Endorse him? A LOT of eyes will be on them today, after all.
To be fair, reports did say that PGMA is also supposed to lead the groundbreaking ceremonies of the Provincial Road Management Project in Barangay Kalabugao, Impasug-ong, Bukidnon. The said project is funded by the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID). Still, one can’t help but wonder why a cabinet meeting has to be called in Malaybalay City.
My only hope is that somehow during the course of the meeting, something can be done about the ongoing Mangima Road repair and rehabilitation project which has caused (and still is causing!) so much inconvenience for the riding public.
The cabinet meeting will reportedly be held at the Northern Mindanao Integrated Agricultural Research Center (NOMIARC) in Barangay Dalwangan, Malaybalay City.
This is one instance when I want to be a fly on the wall!
