Mindanao is my native land. This is where I belong, feel secure and am at peace. To be in Mindanao is to feel the embrace of a warm, soft blanket.

Mindanaoan - Blogging the REAL Mindanao!

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, you should already have an idea by now as to where you can bring your loved one for that special, romantic dinner. However, with just so many choices especially in Davao City, Mindanao, deciding where to go can be quite a challenge. Good thing there’s Pepper and Peppers Restaurant which promises nothing but exquisite food, exclusive dining and elegant ambiance.

Located at The Site, Central Convenience Store Compound, Jacinto Extension corner Mapa Street, Davao City, Pepper and Peppers Restaurant is best known for their killer (and I mean absolutely delish!) Iberian chicken, Chilean shrimp pasta and (my favorite) Sizzling Blackened Chicken.

And come Valentine’s Day, they’ve prepared two Valentine Set menus for you to choose from. The “Hopelessly Devoted” menu boasts of potato leek soup, one quarter Iberian chicken, pasta bolognese, breaded dory fish (this is another favorite of mine – I always try to order this whenever I’m back home in Davao), fruit salad and a glass of Sangria. Meanwhile, the “Love Me Tender” menu boasts of pumpkin soup (if you haven’t tried pumpkin soup yet, this Feb. 14 is the best time to try it!), twin set (fall of the bone) baby back ribs (another fave!), pasta bolognese, grilled dory fish topped with tomatoes and cucumber, fruit salad and a glass of Sangri.

As you can see, each set is complete – from starters to desserts – and you and your loved one can cap off that indulgent meal with a glass of Sangria.

Still, if you prefer to stick with Pepper and Peppers Restaurant’s bestsellers, try to order the Chilean shrimp pasta and the sizzling blackened chicken. You won’t be disappointed.

Pepper and Peppers Restaurant Davao City is definitely every foodie’s haven! Don’t leave Davao without paying them a visit!

Food, Reviews

One of the restaurants I tend to go to whenever I’m in the City of Golden Friendship here in Mindanao (Cagayan de Oro City, of course) is Bigby’s Cafe and Restaurant. Ever since they opened in Cagayan de Oro nearly ten years ago on December 8, 1998, people have raved about their appetizing food choices and of course, the size of their servings. True to its name, Bigby’s offers meals in BIG sizes and they make sure that you leave their cafe and restaurant full and contented. Actually, you may even end up bringing some of your food home because that’s how large their servings are.

So anyways I was in CDO last weekend with my mom and we decided to eat dinner at Bigby’s SM Cagayan de Oro. My mom ordered the Boomerang Shrimps meal (P219.00) and soda while I ordered the Bigby’s Pork Steak (P219.00) and raspberry iced tea (P85.00) *Photos were taken using a Motorola Krzr.

As you can see, the serving is HUGE yet the meal is, IMO, affordable.

The meat was tender and lean and was served on a sizzling plate. What I liked was that the meat was juicy and delish. The cup of rice, by the way, is already part of the P219.00 meal.

My mom was craving for dessert so she walked towards the display counter and looked at the array of cakes and pastries. When she got back to our table, she told me that she ordered the Bigby’s Cheese Caramel Cake. I haven’t tried that yet so I really didn’t know what to expect. Lo and behold, this was served to us:

The slice was so large it almost filled the entire plate!

My mom was a bit surprised, too. I told her that in Bigby’s, they don’t serve cheesecake. They serve CCCHHHEEESSSEEEE CCAAAAKKKKEEEE :D

One serving of this caramel cheesecake is priced at P250.00. That may be a bit expensive for many but I tell you, this slice is good for 4-5 people. There’s no way only two people can finish this off! The cake tastes rich and you would really know that they didn’t scrimp on the ingredients. Pretty delish.

And yep, you guessed it right. We brought a large portion of it home.

Camiguin, Humor, Mindanaoan Update, Tourism, Travel, Weird

Before I finally hit the sack this chilly Sunday evening, let me share with y’all a funny photo I took the last time I was in Camiguin Island, Mindanao, Philippines. My mother, brothers and I went to Camiguin (also known as the Island Born of Fire) early this year and stayed there for 5 days.

Anyways, on our second day in the island, we decided to make a quick stop at a restaurant at the Parola area (some of the locals also call it “break water”) since we needed “baon” for our day tour. I also had to go to the washroom.

So imagine my amusement when I found this:

Plastered on the men’s washroom door, meanwhile, is a framed brief.

I remember laughing so hard that I absolutely needed to enter the women’s CR right away, lest that I end up pissing right there and then!

Some people might find this odd and crass (insulting even) but I found it amusing and pretty smart, if I may say so.

First of all, it’ll be easier for the customers. No need for them to bug the restaurant’s staff members anymore. The staff members, on the other hand, will no longer be pestered by costumers who are just too lazy to read the sign.

Second, it’s visual so unless a male has the tendency to wear white bikini thongs with pink lining, then he’d actually know that this isn’t the right door.

Third, it’s an in-your-face way of reminding you which door is for who.

Fourth, it’s a pretty effective marketing tactic. A tourist will see it, laugh her ass off, take a photo of it, post it on the Internet and blog about it (I THINK I know someone who has done the same thing hah! :D ) Or it’ll be a conversation piece. Or a reminder of Camiguin Island and of all the great, fun things you did there and that you need to go back soon!

And fifth, it’s a way to remind tourists that, yes, the people of Camiguin, Mindanao have a sense of humor and that they sincerely hope that you come back and pay them a visit again.
