Mindanao is my native land. This is where I belong, feel secure and am at peace. To be in Mindanao is to feel the embrace of a warm, soft blanket.

Mindanaoan - Blogging the REAL Mindanao!

Popular band Spongecola will perform in Davao City, Mindanao today, October 9, 2009, during the Bagong Sigla benefit concert at Damosa Market Basket, Lanang, Davao City. Entrance is technically not free since you’re requested to bring some canned goods, a pack of rice, dry and usable clothing, bottled water or medicines but this is for a good cause so it’s still all good, yes?

Alternatively, you can also just donate a minimum of one peso at the concert gates to gain admission (although I highly suggest that you bring more than that please) Beneficiaries will be the typhoon Ondoy victims.

This Bagong Sigla concert will actually be held simultaneously in Manila, Iloilo, Davao and Dagupan. Originally planned to be a free musical concert in time for Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero’s 40th birthday, it’s now a huge, nationwide benefit concert for the Tropical Storm Ondoy victims (Ondoy’s international code name is Ketsana).

The Manila concert will  be held at Liwasang Ullalim at the Cultural Center of the Philippines Complex and it will feature BAMBOO, Miguel Escueta and Chicosci. Imago will lead the concert in Dagupan while Cueshe will provide the entertainment in Iloilo. Dabawenyos, meanwhile, will be in the company of Spongecola.

“Sugod! Kilos! Tayo ang Bagong Sigla” underscores Chiz Escudero’s call for a united front.

Chiz will celebrate his 40th birthday on October 10, 2009 and reports say that he will state his intentions to run for president in the May 2010 elections on October 12, 2009.

chiz-in-maguindanaoThe next Philippine national elections may still be a little over a year away from today but the various personalities believed to be among the “2010 senatoriables” and “2010 presidentiables” have started to make their presence felt here in Mindanao.

Just a few days ago, Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay paid Cagayan de Oro City, Mindanao a visit. He was the guest of honor in an SK-related event, I think. However, sources told me that he also proceeded to the Province of Bukidnon to meet some political allies.

Care to guess what they discussed?

Senator Mar Roxas, on the other hand, has also been visible around Mindanao as of late. Touted as the Liberal Party’s presidential bet, Senator Mar has been doing the rounds here as commencement exercises speaker.

Same thing with the solon from Sorsogon, Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero. He was in Iligan City, Davao City, Ozamis City, Cagayan de Oro City and Maguindanao recently. Chiz’s office also released some video greetings wherein he spoke in various dialects including Bisaya.

Check out his Kaamulan 2009 greeting for the people of Bukidnon (this video also appears in Bukidnon Online):

The Office of Senator Richard Gordon, meanwhile, has also been on a roll as of late. I’ve been receiving a ton of press releases/media statements from his office.

Another Mindanaoan believed to have very good chances of winning a Senatorial seat has also slowly but surely started to become more and more visible — Atty. Adel Tamano.

With these types of direct and “subtle” PR efforts, you can’t help but wonder if the campaign season has already begun. When does being a public servant end and being a “presidentiable” or “senatoriable” begin?

And more importantly — given all their visits and PR campaigns here in Mindanao — do you think they’ve tickled the Mindanaoan’s fancy?

Apparently he now is! The once spokesperson of former President Erap Estrada (the late Fernando Poe, Jr.) and now opposition senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero was recently “adopted” as a Datu. Chiz Escudero is now also known as “Datu Matansub” (meaning approachable and wise).

The adoption of Chiz as a datu was held last March 14, 2009 in Davao City, Mindanao during a meeting with tribal leaders. The meeting was held in line with the Mindanao Indigenous Peoples Conference for People and Development. Check out the photo provided to Mindanaoan by the Office of Senator Francis Escudero below. BY THE WAY — please — if you have plans of reposting this entry or reusing this photo, please have the courtesy to cite the source. Thank you.

Sen. Chiz Escudero shirtsCheck out the contents of a package sent to me via courier recently. (Apologies for the poor quality of the photos as I only took them via my ever trusty Motorola Krzr phone.) Now…is this a sign of things to come? Is this something die hard supporters should be elated about? Or is this just a way for HIM to thank his friends, fans, foes (?) and supporters?

You know…the year 2010 is a presidential election year and this early, we have heard of the many personalities who have made it clear that they have intentions of gunning for the top executive position in Philippine government. From Senator Manny Villar to Senator Mar Roxas to Senator Loren Legarda.

Do you think HE will run?

Do you think he will face Legarda in the quest to get the NPC Party’s nod?

And do you think he has good chances of winning?

Share your thoughts!

Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero has proposed that bus drivers who commit criminal negligence in road mishaps should face twenty (20) years of imprisonment. This, in the wake of a lot of vehicular accidents as of late.

The senator from Sorsogon, who currently chairs both the Senate Committee on Ways and Means and the Senate Committee on Justice and Human Rights, introduced Senate Bill Number 2701 (SBN 2701) which aims to provide more teeth to existing preventive policies to achieve safety benefits. SBN 2701 penalizes criminal negligence committed by common carriers with reclusion temporal, or twelve (12) years to twenty (20) years in prison, in case of death.

Common carriers’ criminal liability is found in Article 365 of the Revised Penal Code, Criminal Negligence, which provides as penalty of imprisonment arresto mayor to prision correccional or from one (1) month to four (4) years and two (2) months, depending on the gravity of the resultant crime or felony.

I don’t know about you but I think the number of recent road accidents is really very alarming.

Here in Mindanao, for instance, 15 people died in a road accident in Dangcagan, Bukidnon last week. A 10-wheeler truck rammed into an L300 van, leaving all of its 15 passengers plus driver dead. I actually just got word from my sources in Dangcagan that the truck owner can only afford to give P10,000.00 (roughly US $250.00) to each of the passengers. Isn’t that so pathetic?

So now, given this new move from Senator Chiz, I do hope that our roads become safer and our drivers become more responsible.

What do you think of this proposed legislation?
