Mindanao is my native land. This is where I belong, feel secure and am at peace. To be in Mindanao is to feel the embrace of a warm, soft blanket.

Mindanaoan - Blogging the REAL Mindanao!

ABS-CBN Kapamilya star John Lloyd Cruz and popular band Rivermaya will headline the much-awaited Kapamilya Karavan – Cagayan de Oro on August 28, 2009 at Gran Via Lot, SM CDO, Cagayan de Oro City, Mindanao. This fun musical event will be held on the very same day Cagayan de Oro City celebrates its fiesta.

Expect legions of fans to watch John Lloyd and other Kapamilya stars on August 28! Of course, the ABS CBN Cagayan de Oro family, M.O.R. CDO family and some representatives from ABS CBN Manila will be at the event. This early, not a few have already told me that they’ll be at the venue early so that they can situate themselves near the stage. Sabagay…who wouldn’t want to be up close and personal with Mr. Ingat himself?

Mindanaoan was tapped to book two local artists that will serve as front acts during the event. I hired the Alyss and the Novelista Pasta bands. Watch out as they add more vibrance to the show! I was also tapped to hire a professional photographer for the event so naturally, I booked my very talented brother Bon. If you want to see just how talented he is, check out his website where you can find samples of his work.

I will also take photos, but of course! ;) I wouldn’t want to miss this chance! So don’t forget to SUBSCRIBE TO MINDANAOAN so that you’ll be among the very first to see photos taken during the ABS CBN Kapamilya Karavan in CDO! See you there :)

rachelleanngoTo boost promotions for her new CD, singer Rachelle Ann Go will hold a mall show at SM Cagayan de Oro City, Mindanao on March 14, 2009.

Cagayan de Oro City, Hotels, Reviews, Travel

Back in college, the Ateneo Glee Club had a joint concert with the Xavier University (Ateneo de Cagayan University) Glee Club. (Don’t laugh but I was one of the Sopranos of the Ateneo Glee Club :D ) Anyways, all of us had to stay with either foster families or in lodging houses in Cagayan de Oro City. Casa Crystalla, a budget hotel in the City of Golden Friendship, was one of the concert’s sponsors and they offered several rooms for my co-club members. (I stayed with the lovely Yap family)

Fast forward a few years later, Casa Crystalla is now one of the CDO inns I stay in whenever I’m in town. There are a couple of reasons why I like staying there – for one, the rates are very affordable (I usually get the deluxe room with ref, table and chairs – like a mini sala set of sorts – and bath tub worth P900.00 per night), secondly, the rooms are clean and thirdly, Casa Crystalla is located right in the heart of the city — just a block away from Xavier University and a few steps away from the Divisoria area where the Night Cafe is held every Friday and Saturday. It’s also very easy to take the jeep or a cab from the inn.

The inn’s room service is actually from Mom’s Corner, a food joint beside Casa Crystalla. You’d need to fork out service charge for every order, though. If you want to dine out, however, you have lots of choices! Casa Crystalla is near fastfood joints (Chowking, McDonald’s, Jollibee are all just a few blocks away), restaurants like Max’s and even local favorites like Annabel’s (where I always have my fill of their killer palabok!) Mom’s Corner is closed on Sundays, though, so if you need to have breakfast or lunch on a Sunday, you’d need to go out of the inn. SM Cagayan de Oro City is just a jeepney ride away (or if you want to take a cab, prepare roughly P80.00) as well as LimKetKai Mall.

Every room in Casa Crystalla has cable TV. What I just don’t like sometimes is the buggy cable receiver and remote control. Sometimes I need to get up to adjust the volume or to change channels.

The bed sheets are clean and I think the management just recently changed the comforters and pillow cases.

There’s also a large closet for your clothes, some hangers and a space for your bags. No in-house slippers are offered so you need to bring your own pair. Oh yeah, before I forget, one of the things I like is the fact that there’s a seat the foot of the bed. Not exactly a seat SEAT but at least a space where you can place your bag while you sort through your things or where you can sit on while putting on your shoes. It’s nothing big, I know, but for a frequent traveler like myself, I find it nice that a small lodging place in Cagayan de Oro City took the time out to put something like that. I often only find seats like that at the foot of the bed in larger hotels.

Guests are provided with towels and soap. If you forgot to bring shampoo and other toiletries, you can buy some from the front desk. The bathrooms are clean – the bathtub is clean and there’s hot and cold shower.

By the way, just in case your room has a couple of coffee, sugar and cream packs near the vanity table, do note that those aren’t for free. I think we ended up paying P15.00 for every serving – still affordable, IMHO. And yes, the room we usually get has an electric water heater. So just in case you want to drink coffee early in the morning, you can just do so right in your own room.

So there you go – if you’re looking for a budget hotel or budget inn in Cagayan de Oro City, why not try staying in Casa Crystalla? I’m sure you’ll like the place as much as I do!

Are you an owner of a hotel or inn? Do you own a restaurant or any type of business? Do you provide a certain kind of service? Food, Reviews

One of the restaurants I tend to go to whenever I’m in the City of Golden Friendship here in Mindanao (Cagayan de Oro City, of course) is Bigby’s Cafe and Restaurant. Ever since they opened in Cagayan de Oro nearly ten years ago on December 8, 1998, people have raved about their appetizing food choices and of course, the size of their servings. True to its name, Bigby’s offers meals in BIG sizes and they make sure that you leave their cafe and restaurant full and contented. Actually, you may even end up bringing some of your food home because that’s how large their servings are.

So anyways I was in CDO last weekend with my mom and we decided to eat dinner at Bigby’s SM Cagayan de Oro. My mom ordered the Boomerang Shrimps meal (P219.00) and soda while I ordered the Bigby’s Pork Steak (P219.00) and raspberry iced tea (P85.00) *Photos were taken using a Motorola Krzr.

As you can see, the serving is HUGE yet the meal is, IMO, affordable.

The meat was tender and lean and was served on a sizzling plate. What I liked was that the meat was juicy and delish. The cup of rice, by the way, is already part of the P219.00 meal.

My mom was craving for dessert so she walked towards the display counter and looked at the array of cakes and pastries. When she got back to our table, she told me that she ordered the Bigby’s Cheese Caramel Cake. I haven’t tried that yet so I really didn’t know what to expect. Lo and behold, this was served to us:

The slice was so large it almost filled the entire plate!

My mom was a bit surprised, too. I told her that in Bigby’s, they don’t serve cheesecake. They serve CCCHHHEEESSSEEEE CCAAAAKKKKEEEE :D

One serving of this caramel cheesecake is priced at P250.00. That may be a bit expensive for many but I tell you, this slice is good for 4-5 people. There’s no way only two people can finish this off! The cake tastes rich and you would really know that they didn’t scrimp on the ingredients. Pretty delish.

And yep, you guessed it right. We brought a large portion of it home.

Humor, Mindanaoan Update, Opinion, Photos, Weird

I’m not a visual display expert but I think this display of wigs over at Marcella SM Cagayan de Oro branch looks weird. Scary even.

I was paying for the items I bought at the said store when I saw this area near the cashier. Don’t these look as if they came right out of a scene in the cult flick “The Ring“? Or don’t these look like as if these are real ladies waiting for their hair to be shampooed?

I mean this is just my personal opinion but come on! I appreciate that the Marcella store needs to showcase the wigs and sell them but I seriously think there’s a much better way to arrange the display.

Apologies for the low quality of the photos. Just took this one with my Motorola Krzr.
