Mindanao is my native land. This is where I belong, feel secure and am at peace. To be in Mindanao is to feel the embrace of a warm, soft blanket.

Hello fellow Mindanawans! Planning a trip to CDO soon? Here’s a budget hotel in Cagayan de Oro City, Mindanao that you might be interested in.

Lamar Inn, located at the corner of JR Borja and Velez Streets (just a few blocks away from Divisoria, the heart of the city), is a downtown hotel that offers value for money. Conveniently located at the central business district of the City of Golden Friendship and owned and operated by VIP Hotel (which is located just right across the street), Lamar Inn CDO offers reasonably priced rooms and good amenities.

lamar inn business type roomThey have 14 tourist type rooms (P750.00 per night), 8 business type rooms (P850.00 per night) and two suites (P1,300.00 per night).

The business type room that we stayed in recently was air conditioned, had cable television, had a telephone and a hot beverage utility set.

Hence, it was easy for us to prepare coffee even in the middle of the night and early in the morning.

Our room also had hot and cold shower and a clean bathroom. We had clean towels and two bars of soap. No free shampoo but you can easily buy sachets from the reception desk. Bottled mineral water can also be bought at the reception area, by the way.

What I also liked about the business type room was the FREE wireless internet connection! On our first night of stay in Lamar Inn Cagayan de Oro, my wi-fi capable phone caught two wifi signals – Lamar’s and CGC (I reckon this stands for Canoy Group of Companies, the owners of Lamar Inn and yes, of VIP Hotel). I just asked for the security keys from the front desk and I was browsing the web in no time.

The hotel staff members were friendly, by the way, and they made sure that they kept our luggage safe (we had to leave our things for a few hours).

When my professional wedding photographer-brother Bon told me that I was to serve as one of his 2nd photographers in a wedding to be held in Ozamiz City, I need not think twice. I haven’t been to Ozamis City yet and I’ve always wanted to visit the place. For one, I’ve always been curious of the place and of the many things I’ve heard about it. Secondly, any road trip around Mindanao is always a welcome thought for me. And thirdly, any chance for me to be a wedding photographer is always great news.

Together with fellow photographer Onat, the video coverage team members and Bon, we left Cagayan de Oro City for Ozamis City last January 7, 2010. From CDO, we traveled towards Iligan City (2 hours from CDO) and then onwards to Kolambugan, Lanao del Norte (about an hour after Iligan).

In Kolambugan, we boarded one of those Roll On, Roll Off (RORO) ferries at Mukas Sea Port. Mind you, the RORO ferry had a large airconditioned area with cushioned seats for passengers and even a few tables where passengers can eat or have coffee (like we did :D ) From Mukas Port to Ozamiz City, we only paid P20.00 per person and the trip was pretty fast. It only took us about 20 minutes!

Here’s a photo I took at Mukas Port using my cellular phone:

Zest Air, formerly Asian Spirit, is now back to serving the Zamboanga-Sandakan route. This is definitely good news for travelers who want a faster way to reach Sandakan, Malaysia…and hopefully a way to discourage people from using the back border.

The Zamboanga-Sandakan route is in consonance with the continuing confidence in the potentials of trade, tourism and investment in the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA). Zest Air is now plying the said route three times a week.

Check out the photo of the 56-seater MA60 modern ark aircraft below:

ZestAir zamboanga to sandakan malaysia

This Zamboanga to Sandakan, Malaysia route is, I believe, Zest Air’s first international flight here in Mindanao. The airline company currently serves flights to Hongkong and soon in Japan, Incheon Korea (December 4, 2009). Check out Zest Air’s website to know more.

Interested to visit Camiguin Island for this month’s Lanzones Festival 2009? Check out the Camiguin Lanzones Festival 2009 schedule below. The 30th Lanzones Festival of the Island of Camiguin aims to give tribute to…well, what else…but the delicious lanzones fruit. If you haven’t tried lanzones from Camiguin, Mindanao yet, you’re missing a lot! Camiguin lanzones are best known for their sweet taste.

If you’re heading on down to Camiguin Island, don’t forget to bring your camera, lots of suntan lotion (Mindanaoan highly recommends that you visit both Mantigue Island and White Island), swimwear and other travel essentials…just don’t bring sand, please! There are funny (but cute!) things to see in the place dubbed as “Island Born of Fire.”

By the way, if you’re looking for a hotel in Camiguin or any type of accommodation, you might want to check my Camiguin accommodations reviews here.
