Mindanao is my native land. This is where I belong, feel secure and am at peace. To be in Mindanao is to feel the embrace of a warm, soft blanket.

Mindanaoan - Blogging the REAL Mindanao!

In true Rico Blanco form! Rico, a former Rivermaya vocalist, is known for his advocacies and selfless deeds. He’s an active campaigner of a lot of causes – especially those that aim to champion the Filipino spirit.

This time around, this very talented Filipino musician is helping raise additional funds for fellow Pinoys affected by typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng by coming up with the new song entitled “Bangon” – completely FREE. In exchange for a free download of Bangon, Rico’s hoping that people will donate.

Trust me, the song is amazing, beautiful work that only a Rico Blanco can produce!

The very first time I heard it, I got goosebumps all over! It’s a truly inspiring song and you cannot help but feel the spirit of volunteerism, faith and hope!

While future announcements will be made in Rico’s official website, you may now send in your donations via text. Just key in “BANGON” and send to 5677. Rico Blanco is waiving all royalties, the amount of which will go to our countrymen affected by the typhoons.

Kudos to Rico Blanco and his friends who also volunteered their services — drummer Robert Dela Cruz, bassist Berns Cuevas, Blue Light studios, Angee Rozul, Tracks studios.

Meanwhile, here are the lyrics to the new Rico Blanco song “Bangon.” An unofficial video can also be found below.

Just a quick note — one of my fondest memories of Rico Blanco and his strong belief in causes that affect many was when he agreed to send in a video greeting the people of Bukidnon during one of the World AIDS Day events I organized not too long ago. Despite his super hectic schedule at that time, he managed to come up with the video and send it to me via email…and even helped me promote the event! Suffice it to say, his video surprised (and definitely made a lot of people so happy!) the audience. I will always be grateful for what he did for me :) Thank you Rico!

To you Rico Blanco — thank you for sharing your gift. Padayon! (continue!)

LYRICS OF BANGON – Rico Blanco’s newest song that you can download for free! (please don’t forget to send donations in exchange for a copy of this song or text BANGON and send to 5677)

pinaluhod tayo,
sa isang hagupit
niragasa, sinalanta,
pinaluha

humupa ang unos, isang bahaghari!
dala ng bukang liwayway-
pag-ibig
pagkakaisa

BANGON
pilipinas kong mahal
akay ang pananampalataya sa may kapal
AHON
buhay sa yong dugo
ang tibay na tatak ng tunay na Pilipino

at nagising ang bayanihan
milyon milyon naging isa
walang kami
walang kayo
walang sila
tanging ligaya
ay pag alay ng sarili sa iba

BANGON
pilipinas kong mahal
akay ng pananampalataya sa may kapal
AHON

coda:
lahat nitong mga pagsubok
ay ating kayang lagpasan
lahat nitong mga pagsubok
ay ating kayang lagpasan

Mindanaoans were so eager to listen to Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero’s proclamation. After all, he was the “presidentiable” who hasn’t formally declared his intentions yet…because he was still underage. Now that he has turned 40 years old, though (the minimum age required for a presidential candidate), supporters and critics alike were looking forward to his announcement.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t made today.

chiz escudero

Still, there’s good news for his fans. Escudero has finally made a decision.

And as to whether he’ll really run for president or not…well…your guess is as good as mine.

Chiz, who turned 40 last October 10, 2009, also said that he would not make any political announcement yet because this was not the right time to talk politics. He said that there were still many people suffering because of the recent catastrophes.

Let’s admit,  this earned him brownie points, yes?

Meanwhile, Mindanaoan heard that the Bagong Sigla concert in Davao City was a success. Congratulations to the organizers and to Senator Chiz!

Popular band Spongecola will perform in Davao City, Mindanao today, October 9, 2009, during the Bagong Sigla benefit concert at Damosa Market Basket, Lanang, Davao City. Entrance is technically not free since you’re requested to bring some canned goods, a pack of rice, dry and usable clothing, bottled water or medicines but this is for a good cause so it’s still all good, yes?

bagong sigla davao leg

Alternatively, you can also just donate a minimum of one peso at the concert gates to gain admission (although I highly suggest that you bring more than that please) Beneficiaries will be the typhoon Ondoy victims.

This Bagong Sigla concert will actually be held simultaneously in Manila, Iloilo, Davao and Dagupan. Originally planned to be a free musical concert in time for Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero’s 40th birthday, it’s now a huge, nationwide benefit concert for the Tropical Storm Ondoy victims (Ondoy’s international code name is Ketsana).

The Manila concert will  be held at Liwasang Ullalim at the Cultural Center of the Philippines Complex and it will feature BAMBOO, Miguel Escueta and Chicosci. Imago will lead the concert in Dagupan while Cueshe will provide the entertainment in Iloilo. Dabawenyos, meanwhile, will be in the company of Spongecola.

“Sugod! Kilos! Tayo ang Bagong Sigla” underscores Chiz Escudero’s call for a united front.

Chiz will celebrate his 40th birthday on October 10, 2009 and reports say that he will state his intentions to run for president in the May 2010 elections on October 12, 2009.

Wow, go Mindanao! This piece of news about my beloved hometown is definitely heartwarming :) Davao City will send P10 Million from the city’s own calamity fund for the victims of Tropical Storm Ondoy (international code name: Ketsana). Thank you to Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and to all the members of the city council for this effort! I salute you all and of course, I salute all fellow Dabawenyos for the hard work you’ve all exerted so far.

The money will be coursed through the Philippine National Red Cross. Meanwhile, if you’re in Davao City and have some relief goods or clothes or food to share, please don’t hesitate to drop them off at these areas:

- Ateneo de Davao University (go Ateneo! :) I’m so proud of my school hehe)

- ABS-CBN Davao City (Mc Arthur Highway, Matina)

- Davao Light and Power Corporation offices in Bangoy, Panabo and Bajada

- GMA 7 Davao City (Suazo corner Magsaysay Streets)

Meanwhile, if you’re out of the country or not in Davao City, please REFER TO THIS PAGE for various ways and means for you to help out.

Thank you to all of my fellow Mindanaoans for sharing your blessings :)

Mindanaoan still can’t concentrate well. As much as I want to work and attend to various other matters, I still can’t help but log on to Twitter via Tweetdeck (which I highly recommend that you Twitter-holics use, by the way) and check how the search and rescue as well as the relief goods distribution efforts for Typhoon Ondoy victims are doing. I keep on retweeting helpful information as much as I can and it warms my heart to see so many private citizens doing their share in helping the victims.

Interestingly, though, I received a comment today in my “Advertise” page from a person who calls himself “ew.” I reckon he’s from Luzon. Check this out:

gmtristaniii@gmail.com
125.60.228.50 (I.P. address)

ew……….what an ODD offer…and sorry to say this..but the quality of your website is very cheap…out of the limit..and beside…you are promoting mindanao despite of it’s chaotic happenings…oh my!!!!…WAKE UP!!!!

I guess “ew” (or should I say “gm tristan”) just wanted to stir controversy or irk me so that I could answer him back and help increase his website’s traffic stats. Unfortunately for him, I don’t have the time. Besides, comments like his are the very ones that inspire me (and I’m pretty sure all of you fellow Mindanaoans) to promote Mindanao further. We need not blow our own horns just so others (especially those in the typhoon affected areas) would understand and appreciate what Mindanao is doing for the victims as well, need we?

Anyways, going back to my personal donation drive for Typhoon Ondoy victims, I’m so proud to say that I’ve already received cash donations from 5 people. I’ve already forwarded the money to TXTPower via their Paypal email address. TXTPower, by the way, has announced that they’ve raised around half a million already! Thank you so much to all the donors! And because I’m still uber inspired to help out even though I’m here in Mindanao, I’m organizing a fundraiser tomorrow, Wednesday, September 30, 2009.

Thank you very much to Ruffa Gutierrez, Carlos Celdran, Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero, Manolo Quezon III and Neric Acosta for helping Mindanaoan spread the word about my fundraiser through Twitter :) Daghang salamat!

Meanwhile, I found this very helpful list of places, organizations, drop off points, relief goods distribution centers etc Hopefully, this can help you and your friends. So Mindanao – what have you done for the Typhoon Ondoy victims? What are you doing for your country today?
