Have you ever been curious about Zamboanga? I know that a lot of non-Mindanaoans have impressions and ideas about Zamboanga City, Zamboanga del Sur and Zamboanga del Norte and sadly, more often than not, these aren't good. Good thing there's an upcoming Zamboanga festival that you might want to attend --- and hopefully through the Zamboanga Hermosa Festival 2011, your impression of Zamboanga will change/improve and you might find yourself falling in love with this charming city in Mindanao.
This October, Zamboanga will celebrate the much-awaited 2011 Zamboanga Hermosa Festival. With the theme, "Fiesta Hermosa...Vamos A Zamboanga!," this Min...

It's been more than 2 weeks since their highly successful Cagayan de Oro, Philippines show but this Filipina travel and lifestyle blogger is still buzzin'! Yes, folks, I'm still on a high! :D
As you guys may know, Mindanaoan.com was an official media partner of the All 4 One and Color Me Badd back-to-back concert last September 10, 2011 at the Atrium of the Limketkai Center in Cagayan de Oro City, Mindanao, Philippines. It was a major thing for a certified fan like myself --- not only did I get to meet the boys up close and personal (OMG!!!), spend time with them and see their real, offstage personas, I also had the chance to gather autographs, take lots of photos and...*drum roll please*...meet them again in Manila before they flew out for Los Angeles! *cartwheels*
I will share with...

Amid other big news today, the reported resignation of Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri was the most talked about. A lot of people shared their reactions to the news that the senator from Bukidnon and fellow Mindanaoan Senator Migs Zubiri will resign amid allegations of poll fraud claims. Mindanaoan wrote a blog post about this earlier.
As I previously mentioned, I called up some key people from the Zubiri camp. I also even contacted Senator Migs Zubiri himself. However, although I was privy to some important details, I refused to confirm anything pending the privilege speech of Senator Miguel Zubiri before the Senate plenary, which happened today, August 3, 2011. I was also told that his father, former Bukidnon governor now vice governor Jose Ma. Zubiri, Jr., mother Maria Victoria "Vicky," w...

So it's OFFICIAL. A fellow Mindanaoan is now the world's shortest man. Declared by the officials of the Guinness Book of World Records as the new "world's shortest living man," Sindangan, Zamboanga del Norte resident Junrey Balawing celebrated his 18th birthday last June 12, 2011 (a day before the Philippine Independence Day). The Guinness people officially measured the Zamboangueno, however, on the eve of his birthday at Sindangan Health Center, Sindangan township, Zamboanga Del Norte, Mindanao. That makes Junrey Balawing not only the world's shortest living man today but the world's shortest living man in history as well!
Guess what Balawing's measurements were? The Zamboanga native was measured at 24 and 1/4 inches (about 61 centimeters) lying down and about two inches shorter than t...
You heard the theme song. You got intrigued when you heard this - "kaya mo bang mahalin ang isang taong mawawala din sayo?" And, by now, it's likely that you've memorized this line - "Thank you for yesterday. Thank you for today. And if I forget, thank you for tomorrow."
Yes, it seems you're ready to fall in love on June 15, 2011.
KC Concepcion and Sam Milby will topbill one of the most awaited movies of this year, the Star Cinema offering "Forever And A Day." Truth be told, I think this KC Concepcion and Sam Milby starrer is THE most awaited movie here in Mindanao - primarily because they shot this flick in 3 key areas in Mindanao - Bukidnon, Cagayan de Oro City and Iligan City (who wouldn't be excited to see familiar places? Plus think about what this film will do for Mindanao tou...

Earlier today, the Senate Committee on Environment and Natural Resources conducted a hearing on alleged smuggling of black corals, turtles, seashells and other marine life. The committee chairman, Mindanaoan Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri, led the investigation.
Unfortunately, the consignee of the P35 million worth of seized shipment of black corals, Exequiel Navarro, was a no-show. This led Senator Migs Zubiri to cite Exequiel Navarro in contempt.
And rightly so.
For one, Navarro reportedly promised to cooperate with the investigation and even give the names of the financiers of this syndicate that allegedly smuggles corals and other marine life from the Philippine shores. According to Senator Zubiri, Navarro executed an affidavit on May 3, 2011. Now, he has become a headache. A he...
ARMM Elections 2011 official list of candidates. Here are the names of candidates for the 2011 ARMM elections, tentatively planned to happen on August 8, 2011. I say tentatively because Philippine President Benigno Aquino III and the rest of Malacanang are trying their best to move for the postponement of the ARMM elections. PNoy is proposing that the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao elections be reset for synchronization with the 2013 midterm polls.
Qualified ARMM voters are set to choose the Regional Governor, Regional Vice-Governor and Regional Assemblyman during the ARMM elections 2011.
Candidates for ARMM Governor: (14 candidates)
Mamintal Alonto Adiong (incumbent Lanao del Sur Governor)
Ashmaira Mayasa Abdullah
Saad Ibrahim Amate
Pangalian Macaorao Balindong
Zest Air Philippines, formerly Asian Spirit, will soon offer Manila to Cagayan de Oro (and vv), Manila to Zamboanga (and vv) as well as Manila to Davao City (and vv) flights! While this sounds promising especially for Mindanao tourism, I'm not sure if the dissatisfied customers of Zest Airways will be excited about this. Remember what happened to fellow bloggers Winston (a.k.a. Batang Yagit) and Conrad Miguel? Their horrible, horrible experiences with Zest Air airlines has left a really bad taste in the mouth and I have tried so hard to avoid booking Zest Air flights like the plague! I would rather pay extra than avail of Zest Air promo flights and undergo a mind numbing 16 hour delay!!!
BUT!!! if only to let you guys know that yes, Zest Air airways will soon land on Mindanao soil and (...
Now this is definitely good news especially for Mindanao tourism and Mindanao trade :) According to this article, Philippine Airlines will start offering Cagayan de Oro - Zamboanga direct flights starting April 1, 2011. So, instead of enduring 10 hours of land travel, passengers may now only have to endure an hour-long flight. PAL has yet to give more details about the upcoming Zamboanga - CdO flights but I must say, this piece of development is exciting! More possibilities for tourism, business deals!
Domingo T. Duerme, PAL vice president for Mindanao, also said that PAL will take over Air Philippines Express' Davao - Zamboanga and Davao - Cagayan de Oro routes. He did not state the reason for PAL’s takeover of the two routes, though.
The upcoming PAL Zamboanga to Cagayan de Oro Cit...
I must admit that even a few days after my humble Mindanaoan.com blog won as Best Lifestyle Blog for Mindanao in the Philippine Blog Awards 2010, I still am on cloud 9.
While a lot of people have already congratulated me (and I still continue to receive several congratulatory messages until now) and even my ever-supportive Mama has already made plans to have a special tarp printed and displayed (yikes! :D), nothing prepared me for an absolutely wonderful surprise I got yesterday.
November 6, 2010, the very day of a blogging 101 workshop that I organized, was made extra special when someone sent in this video message that did not only make my cheeks burn but make my heart melt as well :)
No less than Senator Francis "Kiko" Pangilinan congratulated me!
Yes, THE Senator Kiko Pangili...
Woke up to sweet and absolutely wonderful piece of news today!
This humble blog - www.Mindanaoan.com - won as Best Lifestyle Blog in the recently concluded Philippine Blog Awards 2010 - Mindanao Division!
Yebah! Woot woot! :D
My warmest, sincerest gratitude to the organizers and sponsors of the Philippine Blog Awards 2010! Thank you for the recognition and may you continue to uplift the blogging community!
And of course, my deepest gratitude to all of my readers and followers! Like I previously mentioned, just the thought of you guys sparing a few minutes of your time each day just to come and visit my little online home brings me so much joy and inspiration. I am humbled.
And to the readers and followers of my two other blogs that were also finalists of the PB...
Because if you are, then we need you to help map out precincts!
Google Philippines, through its representative Aileen Apolo, is asking us to please help map precincts in certain regions in Mindanao. A website called Find Your Precinct has been set up and its goal is to help every Filipino find the location of the voting center for their precinct.
The locations found in the said website are contributed by volunteer mappers and it's about time that Mindanaoans join forces and help not only one another but the rest of our fellow countrymen.
According to Aileen, there's still need to map out precincts in Zamboanga, Bukidnon, Camiguin, Lanao and Misamis.
Help now by logging on to Find Your Precinct.
Alternatively, and to make things more fun, you can spearhead a mapping party and...
Don't strike Nur Misuari out just yet!
Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) Chairman Nur Misuari successfully assembled hundreds of MNLF commanders, leaders and members during the 5th National Bangsamoro Consultative Assembly held at Zamboanga Sibugay, Mindanao.
Hundreds of MNLF members came (a lot even came down from the boondocks just for the event) that the local army reportedly got a bit alarmed. Thankfully, authorities understood what the event was for. It was, after all, a peaceful meeting among Bangsamoros.
The 5th National Bangsamoro Consultative Assembly aimed to obtain, through "shura" or Islamic consultation, the pulse of the Moro people regarding the peace talks between the government and the MNLF.
The press statement of the upcoming Mindanao Power Summit 2009 alarmed me. It said that "by 2014, projections have it that Mindanao will have a deficit capacity of 484 megawatts which is equivalent to putting out power in the five major cities of Mindanao - Zamboanga, Cagayan de Oro, Davao, Butuan, and Cotabato."
That means that five years from now, Mindanao will suffer a devastating power crisis and that the situation may reach the most critical state if we do not act fast and act now. The press statement also claimed that the entire Mindanao grid may experience regular rotating brownouts as early as next year (!), especially with the coming in of additional new investments that are anticipated to further deplete the grid’s reserve capacity.
I don't know about you but their statemen...
Zest Air, formerly Asian Spirit, is now back to serving the Zamboanga-Sandakan route. This is definitely good news for travelers who want a faster way to reach Sandakan, Malaysia...and hopefully a way to discourage people from using the back border.
The Zamboanga-Sandakan route is in consonance with the continuing confidence in the potentials of trade, tourism and investment in the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA). Zest Air is now plying the said route three times a week.
Check out the photo of the 56-seater MA60 modern ark aircraft below:
This Zamboanga to Sandakan, Malaysia route is, I believe, Zest Air's first international flight here in Mindanao. The airline company currently serves flights to Hongkong and soon in Japan, Inch...
